What are the responsibilities and job description for the Older Adult Peer Specialist (Short-term) position at Northeast Independent Living Program Inc?
Short-term assignment from April through June.
The Part-time (up to 20 hrs.) Older Adult Peer Specialist provides support and assistance to individuals aged 55 living in Boston. This role supports the development of self-determination, self-advocacy skills, and other strategies that promote recovery and healthy aging. The person must be willing to share their own recovery story when appropriate to promote the well-being of older adults. Chinese or Spanish speakers are highly encouraged to apply.
What you will be doing:
- Meet one-to-one and facilitate groups remotely or in person with older adults living in Boston
- Assist in forming wellness goals which will enhance other’s health
- Collaborate with local community supports to identify individuals who would be interested in this type of support
- Facilitate the connection to resources (such as libraries, fitness centers, community events, religious organizations, substance use support groups like AA and NA, etc.)
- Complete documentation of services provided following established protocols
Who we are looking for?
- A person 50 years old or more, from Boston or someone who can independently travel within the city and surrounding communities
- A person with lived experience of trauma, mental health issues, or substance use disorders
- Conversationally fluent in another language preferably Chinese or Spanish.
- Willingness to be trained as a Certified Older Adult Specialist
- Preferred at least two years of experience facilitating peer groups or be willing to complete a peer group facilitation training within the first 12 months of employment
- Must be able to work independently and as part of a team
- Access to reliable transportation
- A formal mental health diagnosis is not required yet a person with lived experiences of living with trauma histories, mental health issues, or substance use disorders is
