What are the responsibilities and job description for the ENGINEER position at Northeast Ohio Natural Gas?
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Apply sound knowledge of engineering principles and practices to designing and planning installations, replacements, and maintenance of Northeast Ohio Natural Gas pipeline system. Planning complex projects such as distribution supply line extensions and relocations; gas measurement and regulation facilities; (maintaining) corrosion control facilities; and specifying maintenance schedules for pipeline components regulated by Federal and State authorities are typical projects for Engineers.
Engineers complete the design for projects, processes customer service requests, generate cost estimates, determine easement and permit requirements, support project scheduling, and prepare completed project documentation and provide regular updates to maintain data in work, safety, asset, hydraulic modeling and geographical information systems.
The Engineer communicates with internal and external customers, visits project work sites and effectively balances their time in the office and in the field.
FOCUS: Engineering, Safety and Regulatory Compliance
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct surveys of pipeline construction routes and determines optimum locations for pipelines and related components; specifies gas facility types, sizes, and materials to meet D.O.T. design requirements on all varieties of NEO distribution pipelines; and dictates gas handling requirements, including materials and procedures for system maintenance and modifications.
- Figures pipeline and component flow capacity at various pressures, as well as pressure drop at specified flow rates through various pipelines and related components. Review and approve design work by others for service lines for capacity and sizing.
- Calculates all aspects of pipeline and components strength testing requirements including design limits, pressure, test medium, and timing.
- Prepares construction drawings, including high pressure distribution lines and pressure regulating stations; prepares and maintains maps; and reviews municipal as well as private construction drawings to determine interference with proposed or existing NEO facilities and negotiates changes to minimize interference.
- Subject Matter Expert for instrumentation, measurement and control.
- Designs commercial and industrial Meter Set Assembly (MSA).
- Provides detailed construction project cost estimates
- Designs facility installations such as bridge supports and spans; railway and highway crossings; and industrial gas metering equipment and electronic telemeter devices.
- Specifies and plans all aspects of corrosion control facilities including requirements for insulators, galvanic anodes, impressed current stations, cathodic read points, and cathodic interference mitigation. Interference measures may include requirements for drain bonds, shunts, insulators, and anodes.
- Occasionally directs the work of operators in the field. Performs the work of subordinate classifications at the direction of the supervisor.
- Operates a computer for extended periods of time.
- Develops engineering and operating standards and procedures in accordance with applicable federal, state and local regulations, including but not limited to pipeline safety, occupational safety and environmental safety and occasionally provides training to Operation’s staff on the same.
- Performs pipeline construction inspection.
- Utilized system modeling software and run hydraulic flow calculations to confirm, predict and identify potential operational deficiencies and makes recommendation for corrective measures
- Ability to investigate complex problems, identify solutions, and take corrective action.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering from ABET accredited program
- Concise business correspondence skills yield ease in professional situations
- Ingenuity to investigate technical data and subsequently arrive at solutions for complex problems is essential for success
- Knowledge of corrosion control design and maintenance a plus
- Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software systems
- Interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish effective professional relationships with employees and management
- Multi-tasking and managing multiple initiatives at once are a must.
- Experience in the natural gas industry; knowledge of pipeline design, construction and/or operations; experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), proficient with running simulation modeling software (i.e. SynerGi), engineering experience working with Safety regulations including but not limited to PHMSA (Pipeline Safety Standards), National Fuel Gas Code 54, and State administrative code; or any combination of these disciplines is helpful in obtaining this position.
The applicant must have experience with computer applications, possess a valid motor vehicle operator license, and be bondable with no record of felony convictions.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Light manual labor will be encountered in the office and in the field. When in the field, the Engineer may be required to perform, assist or supervise construction, operations and maintenance tasks.
This position requires work in the office and outdoors. When outdoors, this classification is exposed to extremes of heat, cold, noise, and dust. Normal driving situations are encountered when on the road. This position may require lifting objects weighing up to thirty pounds.
SAFETY SENSITIVE JOB
This is a safety-sensitive job and is subject to random drug testing as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
