What are the responsibilities and job description for the School Nurse position at Northeast Washington Educational Service District?
The job of school nurse is done for the purpose of implementing, managing, and delivering school health services to students and participants as defined by laws, regulations, and professional school nursing standards.
This position is 24 hours per week, year-around.
This position will serve students and participants enrolled in Open Doors, Next Generation Zone, and/or Spokane Service Team/YouthBuild programs.
This position will report to the director, School Nursing Services.
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and methods, leading, guiding, and coordinating others, and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is some opportunity to significantly impact the agency’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 50% sitting, 30% walking, and 20% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions, including exposure to illnesses carried by students.
Experience
Experience as a school nurse is preferred
Education
Bachelor’s degree in nursing preferred
Certificates & Licenses
Valid and current Washington State registered nurse license
Valid and current driver license and required automobile insurance
Reliable personal transportation
First aid/CPR/AED certificate or ability to obtain
Clearances
WSP/FBI criminal history background clearance (at employee’s expense).

- Assesses the critical health needs of students in schools (e.g. review Emergency Care Plans (ECP) for students with life-threatening medical conditions, medically fragile students, and students with health concerns and/or requiring nursing treatments) for the purpose of ensuring student/participant safety.
- Collaborates and consults with administrators and other staff for the purpose of identifying school safety and environmental health needs.
- Assesses the physical and emotional health of students within the scope of school nursing practice and initiates referrals for the purpose of diagnosing and treating identified health needs.
- Communicates to staff any student/participant health concerns that impact learning to staff for purpose of ensuring accommodations are provided.
- Coordinates and implements mandated health screenings, including referral and follow-up, for the purpose of conforming with guidelines.
- Supervises, trains, and delegates medication administration and nursing treatments as allowed by law.
- Provides health counseling and crisis intervention to students and serves as an advocate for the health rights of students for the purpose of providing a professional link between the school/program, family, and health community.
- Performs professional nursing tasks, including emergency services, working in health rooms to provide health assessments, treatments, hearing, and vision screenings, etc. for the purpose of ensuring student/participant safety.
- Serves as a resource for health education to the school/program staff.
- Consults and collaborates with staff, parents, and other professionals for the purpose of assessing student health status and making recommendations that are consistent with the individualized education plan.
- Collects healthcare services data for the purpose of providing documentation and being in conformance with health regulations.
- Assists programs/schools with policies and procedures for school health services for the purpose of being in conformance with current laws and accepted practices.
- Prepares a variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities.
