Development Director

NYFS is actively recruiting for a Development Director with three to five years of experience in individual and major donor giving using a data-driven framework for donor engagement strategy. This is an in-person position located out of our Shoreview, MN location with one day per week work remote (Friday). To apply, please email your resume and cover letter to HumanResources@nyfs.org .

Scope of Position :

The primary goal of the Development Director is to lead our development department in achieving our fundraising and communications / marketing goals through a data and goal driven, relational style while staying apprised of and implementing best practices for donor engagement. This position manages our individual donor engagement, grants portfolio, donor database, events, and our internal and external communications. This position supervises a .6 FTE Development Associate and works closely with our President and CEO, finance department, and administrative department. This position will co-create the strategy and lead the implementation of all fundraising and communications / marketing activities, working with consultants on grant writing and graphic design. This person is responsible for developing practices for storytelling that support the dissemination and documentation of communities, calls to action, events / fundraising, and stories via original content development. This position will also participate on the Leadership Team, the Board Development Committee, and in board meetings where appropriate.

Position responsibilities include, but are not limited to :

  • Individual Donor Fundraising (60% of position)

Work with the President and CEO to steward major donors using the moves management process, prioritizing in-person contact and data tracking practices.

  • Use donor data to develop a strategy for year-over-year increases in overall giving, donor retention, and donor engagement.
  • Lead the creation and implementation of a planned giving campaign.
  • Produce strategic mailed and emailed appeal letter campaigns relying on data and development best practices including our End of Year Appeal, Give to the Max Day, etc.
  • Ensure that all gifts are entered in our database in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Print and mail acknowledgement letters for all donations within a week of receiving a donation.
  • Make donor thank you calls in partnership with the President and CEO and volunteers.
  • Act as the administrator for our fundraising database, SalesForce, including data maintenance and cleanup.
  • Marketing / Communications (20% of position)
  • Lead the creation and implementation of our annual communication / marketing calendar.

    Manage our social media accounts including producing content, posting, updating information and graphics while ensuring it is relevant, informative, and engaging to our community.

    Elevate the NYFS brand in the community through the NYFS website and donor newsletter.

    Work with our contractor to keep our website updated and ensure it has accurate, comprehensive, and up-to-date information about the agency, our staff, and our services.

    Develop and maintain media / news outlet contacts for promoting NYFS initiatives and events.

    Coordinate with the President and CEO to create and disseminate our annual report.

  • Oversee grant research, writing, and reporting to foundations and government agencies. (10% of position)
  • Manage our grant portfolio calendar to ensure the timely submission of all grants and reports.

  • Work with our contract grant writer, President and CEO, and program staff in our applications and reports to foundations, local, county, and state grants.
  • Work with program and finance staff to provide all needed stats and financial data to foundation funders.
  • Conduct continuous grant prospecting using appropriate tools / resources.
  • Events and Management (10% of position)
  • Participate in the Board of Directors’ Development Committee.

    Produce annual organizational event to engage community and new prospective donors.

    Hold smaller events to engage major donors in the work of NYFS.

    Participate in Leadership Team Meetings to help plan and execute organization-wide strategy.

  • Complete board reports and present Development & Communications updates at board meetings, where appropriate.
  • Work with the President and CEO to manage and steward relationships with various endowments, local civic groups, and donor advised funds.
  • Integrate and engage NYFS staff in Development & Communications Department.
  • Required Qualifications :

  • Postsecondary education or commensurate years’ experience related to Communications, Fundraising, Marketing, Nonprofit Management, or Social Work.
  • Three to five years of experience in individual and major donor giving using a data-driven framework for donor engagement strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to propose, plan, initiate, and implement development activities, with proven fundraising results.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines, be detail and results oriented.
  • Demonstrated experience with producing creative design aspects related to website, social media, and marketing.
  • A commitment to the principles of Community-Centric Fundraising (https : / / communitycentricfundraising.org / ccf -principles / ).
  • Strong candidates will have a solid understanding of their own culture and practice sensitivity and respect to the cultural backgrounds of clients as well as other staff.     Salary Range : $78,400-$98,000 per year based on education, training and / or experience.
