Job Summary:
The University Content Editor is a key member of the Marketing and Communications team, responsible for ensuring clear, consistent and engaging communication across Northeastern Illinois University’s print and digital platforms. The ideal candidate is a highly skilled writer and editor with exceptional attention to detail, capable of writing content for internal and external audiences. This individual will collaborate across the Division of Marketing and Communications to create compelling, audience-focused content that aligns with the University’s goals, voice and branding standards.
Job Description:
Content Development, Proofreading, and Editing
- Write copy for internal and external stakeholders ensuring clarity, accuracy and adherence to University editorial standards
- Proofread new and existing web pages, news articles, press releases and other copy for grammar, style and consistency
- Collaborate on key University projects and initiatives as assigned.
Inbox Management
- Monitor the Public Relations inbox:
1. Respond to and manage requests for targeted announcements and updates to the University Events Calendar (UEC).
2. Address inquiries submitted through the University Feedback Form and forward as needed.
3. Direct vendors and external queries to appropriate units.
University Events Calendar (UEC)
- Work with the University community to draft, edit, and publish events to the University calendar
Website Content Management
- Review and edit web page submissions to ensure accuracy, alignment with user experience best practices, and adherence to SEO guidelines.
Social Media Content Creation and Management
- Using tools like Loomly, write, edit, and schedule engaging content for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, and YouTube).
- Collaborate with departments to produce compelling captions, visuals, and campaigns that align with University goals.
- Monitor platform activity, respond to comments and messages, and refer inquiries to appropriate units (e.g., prospective students).
- Track performance metrics to evaluate content impact and optimize engagement.
- Manage content sharing, including posting to stories, highlights, and event feeds.
- Proofread and schedule targeted announcements and updates for Board of Trustees meetings.
- Assist in proofreading and scheduling University policy announcements.
Minimal Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, radio/television broadcasting, web/digital media, or a related field.
2. One (1) year (12 months) of professional work experience in public relations, journalism, social media communications, newspaper reporting, radio/television broadcasting with emphasis on production, or web/digital media.
3. Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.
Departmental Preferences:
- Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in writing, editing, marketing or communications
- Strong experience creating content for websites, social media, email marketing and print materials
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines while maintaining high-quality work
- Proficiency in content management systems (CMS), email platforms (e.g., Emma), and social media scheduling tools (e.g., Loomly)
- Knowledge of Associated Press (AP) Style
- Exceptional grammar, editing and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail
- Experience working in higher education institutions
- Publication or agency experience
- Demonstrated ability to translate complex ideas into clear, engaging content for diverse audiences
Hourly: $27.63
