A Restorative Nursing Assistant (RNA) is a healthcare professional who plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation and maintenance of residents. RNAs work under the direction of licensed nurses or therapists to provide care aimed at improving or maintaining a patient’s mobility, strength, and daily living skills.
Responsibilities of the Restorative Care Nurse (RNA) :
Assist patients with range-of-motion (ROM) exercises.
Help implement walking or ambulation programs.
Guide patients through strength-building routines.
Help patients regain independence in tasks like dressing, eating, grooming, and toileting.
Encourage participation in self-care activities.
Provide training in transferring, positioning, and proper use of assistive devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, and canes.
Prevent issues like contractures and pressure sores by promoting mobility.
Record progress in restorative programs.
Report changes in a patient’s condition to nurses or therapists.
Encourage patients to meet rehabilitation goals.
Provide emotional and motivational support during recovery.
Work closely with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and nursing staff to follow individualized care plans.
Qualifications of the Restorative Nursing Assistant (RNA) :
Valid Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) cerification in VA
Specialized training in restorative care
Good communication and motivational skills.
Knowledge of basic therapeutic exercises and adaptive equipment.
