  • This position is posted as Gas Appliance Repair Technician, which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Master Meter Operator.

Job Description


Northern Arizona University is seeking an individual that is skilled in Master Meter operator duties. This position installs, repairs, inspects, and maintains the university gas appliances, meters, regulators, and distribution lines to ensure they are operating effectively. Inspects gas system processes, identifies areas for improvement within department, and makes necessary adjustments. Monitors and maintains records of university gas system needs and compiles maintenance reports with information related to university gas systems to be used for recommendations.

Gas appliance maintenance, repair, and installation - 50%

  • Maintains, repairs, and installs gas fired furnaces, unit heaters, cook stoves, water heaters, boilers, dual heating domestic system water heaters, gas lab distribution and equipment, conventional and power vented equipment
  • Develop and operate preventative maintenance program for all gas equipment
  • Ordering parts and equipment, and maintaining inventory
  • Inspect and maintain building regulators
  • Inspects all buildings meters, regulators, supply lines and gas fired equipment for leaks and improper usage.

Natural Gas Operation and Emergency Response - 20%

  • Maintains Natural Gas Regulatory Compliance
  • Perform or supervise leakage surveys and leak investigations within NAU facilities.
  • Perform or supervise the inspection, repair, and/or replacement of piping, valves, risers, regulators, reliefs, and any other natural gas equipment.
  • Maintain qualifications within NAU Operator Qualification Plan
  • Plans, responds to, and/or manages response to utility emergencies.
  • Participates in on call rotation.
  • Use combustion analyzers, CGIs, and 4 gas meters to respond to gas odor CO calls.

Planning and Reporting - 15%

  • Documentation of rates of failure and unplanned maintenance for program planning.
  • Investigates and makes recommendations on emerging technologies for natural gas and civil utility systems.
  • Actively maintain cutting edge knowledge of industry practices pertaining to higher education and continually suggest process improvements based on industry changes.
  • Assists with project and master plan teams to determine correct expansion or improvement of the natural gas and civil utility systems.
  • Enter time and materials into CMMS system, analyzes data, monitors metrics and performance, and provides reports about the program.
  • Manages assigned budget, reports on usage, and assists with development of budget/utility rates based on program needs.

811 Utility Staking - 10%

  • Performs skilled work associated with locating and marking all utility lines as requested through the Arizona 811 program and/or as needed to support construction projects. Including, but not limited to, electricity, water, gas, steam, high temperature hot water, chilled water, sewer, storm sewer, reclaimed water, fiber, and other telecommunication lines.
  • Inspect excavations for proper install of carrier piping and marking material.
  • Ensure compliance.

Other - 5%

  • Assists with other Utility systems as needed that may include working in the tunnels.
  • Other duties that assist with the mission of NAU and Facility Services.
  • Snow Removal.

Minimum Qualifications


  • High school degree.
  • 4-6 years of gas appliance repair or related experience.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


  • Extensive knowledge and practical application of federal and local laws, policies, and processes for natural gas distribution, civil utilities, and utility locating.
  • Skills in locating different types of utilities with or without tracer wire.
  • Knowledge and Skills in performing tasks covered by 49 CFR 192
  • Ability to read utility maps and drawings.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards.
  • Skills with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Knowledge of management principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • The ability to work effectively with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of gas distribution systems and equipment including methods and materials used in maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Knowledge of record keeping and inventory methods.
  • Skilled in the use of power tools and equipment related to overall mechanical repair work.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well individually.


Driving Requirement


Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver’s license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. Background Information


This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. If you are applying for a job that requires a CDL, you will be required to register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse and adhere to the clearinghouse requirements. Additionally, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Salary


  • Anticipated salary range is $58,882 - $73,434. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

FLSA Status


This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.

This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. More information on benefits at NAU is available on the Human Resources benefits website. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU. NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
