What are the responsibilities and job description for the Gear-Up Team Leader position at Northern Arizona University?

- This position is for a one week Summer camp June 1st - June 7th, on the NAU Flagstaff Mountain campus.
The Lumberjack Leadership Summit Team Leaders (TLs), under the supervision of the Leadership Summit Program Manager and Arizona GEAR UP Staff, will perform a variety of tasks to promote the mission of the Lumberjack Leadership Summit. TLs live in dorms with participating students, chaperone and supervise students before, during, between, and after scheduled activities and during meals. TLs provide support during scheduled activities by helping to ensure that all students are engaged in discussions and activities and by helping to enforce/reinforce rules and expectations for conduct. TLs also may also facilitate/oversee students’ daily recreational activities. TLs, in collaboration with all Lumberjack Leadership Summit staff, serve as role models for the students and help to ensure the safety and well-being of the students at all times.
Student support - 75%
- Provide support and assist in managing student check-in/check-out.
- Provide students the opportunity and encourage them to experience and participate in activities.
- Co-facilitate assigned workshops as applicable.
- Supervise students throughout all activities.
- Interact with students in a manner that builds their confidence and motivation, promotes positive decision making and personal responsibility, and helps develop leadership and communication skills.
- Develop positive relationships with students and provide a supportive environment.
- Collaborate to maintain order in the university facilities and residential halls.
- Attend all Team Leader briefings, when applicable.
Emergent Situations - 20%
- Advise supervisors of any disciplinary, medical, emotional, or other problems a student may be having as soon as you are aware of the problem.
- Follow established medical protocols as reviewed in orientation.
- Complete Concern/Incident/Medical Report Forms to document students’ illness, injury, misconduct, social and/or emotional issues.

- Other duties as assigned.
- At least one year of college, or currently enrolled in a postsecondary program.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience working with high school adolescents.
- Previous camp counselor experience.
- Well suited to working with adolescents. Essential qualities are patience, a sense of humor, and an appreciation for the ways adolescents are different from adults.
- Responsible. Because our program is residential, all employees must assume a somewhat parental responsibility for students. They must be sensitive and caring, while at the same time firm in setting limits. They must exercise good judgment and conduct themselves professionally at all times.
- Highly motivated. Creativity, attentiveness, and adaptability are necessary in order to provide the best possible experience for students in the program.
- Flexible and able to work under pressure. Our programs are intense and fast-paced, and there is not always a clear difference between being “on duty” and “off duty.” Staff members must be able to keep up with the demands of a rigorous residential schedule and be prepared to pitch in if an unexpected circumstance arises.
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities. Stipend of $1100.
This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
This is a part-time, non-benefit eligible position.
