  • Job Description

    The Student Development Coordinator Senior is a member of a dynamic team committed to access and success for first- generation students at Northern Arizona University (NAU). Within the context of a Hispanic Serving Institution and as a Champion institution within NASPA’s FirstGen Forward Network, NAU’s First-Generation Programs Office is a leader in serving diverse first-generation students who represent a substantial amount of the student body. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, the SDCS will develop, coordinate, and facilitate programs, workshops, and activities designed to elevate first-generation students’ academic and co-curricular experiences, connect students to campus resources, and create a sense of belonging within the program and throughout the NAU community.

    The SDCS will work with several programs, including the First Scholars, First-Generation Peer Mentoring, and other First- Generation Programs initiatives. The SDCS will also provide annual support to the STAR summer bridge program. In alignment with the mission and values of First-Generation Programs, the SDCS should possess a strong understanding of the needs of first-generation, low-income students in higher education to provide holistic support for students of all academic levels.

    Program Coordination & Student Support - 65%

    First Scholars

  • Recruit, select, welcome, and monitor the progress of First Scholars program participants.
  • Design and implement co-curricular programs and events with an emphasis on academic success, social support, individual wellness, professional and personal growth for First Scholars.
  • Meet one-on-one with First Scholars participants, providing holistic support and mentoring with a strong focus on academic success, personal wellness, and career competencies.
  • Create and maintain marketing materials including informational brochures, webpage(s), recruitment materials, resource guides, etc.
  • First-Generation Programs Initiatives

  • Coordinate efforts to elevate and expand the reach of First- Generation Peer Mentoring.
  • Support first-generation college students through targeted outreach, drop-ins, and referrals.
  • Coordinate programs and events to engage, celebrate, and create community for first-generation students.
  • STAR Program

  • Support STAR program operations, including recruitment efforts, staff selection and training, program and event planning, and on- site support.
  • Collaborate with Campus Living and serve as the lead for coordinating hall opening, room assignments, and front desk operations during the program.
  • Co-supervise the paraprofessional and undergraduate STAR staff with the Assistant Director.
  • Serve in on-call rotation during the program.
  • Supervision - 20%

  • Select, train, and supervise First-Generation Peer Mentors throughout the academic year.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise (1) Graduate Assistant.
  • Develop and lead staff meetings, workshops, and professional development opportunities for paraprofessional and undergraduate mentor staff.
  • Provide holistic support to promote staff retention, professional growth, and development of competencies related to successful engagement and mentoring of first-generation students.
  • Assess and provide annual evaluations for Peer Mentors and Graduate Assistant.
  • Assessment & Reporting - 10%

  • Maintain departmental related data used to conduct research and program evaluations for First Scholars and STAR.
  • Complete the annual program report for First Scholars.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining First-Generation student engagement, persistence, retention, and graduation data, including student surveys, and program evaluations.
  • Other - 5%

  • Additional duties and committee work as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 3-5 years of experience in Student Affairs and Higher Education, mentoring, students support services, program management, or related field (s); OR
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in higher education with First-Generation students of low socio-economic status from multicultural, diverse, and intersectional backgrounds.
  • Previous and progressive experience providing student support services and facilitating student success within a college or university environment.
  • Experience in program planning, implementation, and assessment.
  • Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent community and relationship building skills.
  • Works effectively with frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrated success in event or program planning.
  • Prior work supporting students in a higher education setting or related field.
  • Knowledge of issues related to recruitment, persistence, and graduation of students from first- generation and various other diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to work and communicate successfully with people from a variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong problem solving, organizational, and analytical capabilities.
  • Working knowledge of and familiarity with Microsoft Office suite, People Soft, and Sales Force or similar information management systems
  • Background Information

    This position has been identified as a safety / security sensitive position. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campushason-campus student housing.     Salary

    Salary range begins at $51,085. Annual salarycommensurate with candidate's qualifications and relatedexperience.

    FLSA Status

    This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.

    Benefits

    This is a Classified Staff (CLS) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System; paid vacation and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified dependents. Classified Staff employees are in a probationary status for their first six months at NAU.NAU is a tobacco and smoke-free campus.Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). New employees are eligible for benefits on the first day of the pay period following their enrollment, after their employment date. Employees will have 31 days from their start date to enroll in benefits. Additionally, new employees will begin participating in the Arizona State Retirement System, and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it, on the first of the pay period following 6 months after the new employee's start date.
