Role Summary
The Safety Officer for three locations will serve as a resource for ensuring safe practices and as a role model for safety, enforcing safety policies and SOP’s, coordinating annual hearing test, mask fittings, formalin and ethylene oxide testing, and bi-annual TB testing. The Safety Officer will ensure that all safety related training is implemented and provided in accordance with OSHA regulations. The Safety Officer will facilitate injury investigations and take part in the implementation of corrective actions. The Safety Officer will support the teams in identifying hazards through performing Job Hazard Analysis, monthly safety audits.
This is a non-exempt role that is not eligible for overtime after 40 hours and has no supervisory responsibility.
Role Responsibilities
- Support all safety initiatives.
- Work with Supervisors to facilitate safety related training to all staff and visitors.
- Enforce safety policies, SOP’s, and procedures to ensure compliance at both NBR / NBS.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Maintain injury log for monthly KPI’s and annual reporting.
- Engage in professional development to ensure up to date knowledge in covered safety/security related areas.
- Proactively perform weekly / monthly safety walks.

- Facilitate biannual TB screening and annual hearing test, mask fitting, Formalin and Ethylene Oxide air sampling.
- Facilitate injury investigations for all injuries and support corrective actions to mitigate future incidents.
- Facilitate annual safety training for all staff.
- Oversee and provide training for the Emergency Response Team.
- Assist with periodic review of policies and procedures.
- Work with Safety Committee to ensure appropriate PPE.

Role Requirements
- BS or equivalent in relevant scientific, engineering, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or environmental health and safety field required.
- 2-5 years’ experience in a safety related role.
- Certification in one of the following Safety Officer programs, preferred:
- Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
- Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
- Strong understanding of AAALAC and OSHA guidelines
- Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and the ability to learn and use additional applications.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local radiation safety regulations, and protocols and/or procedures
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
- Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.

Special Requirements
- The person filling this position will spend time in an office setting and in a laboratory setting.
- There will be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals.
- Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 masks and respirators.

- Ability to spend the majority of the day standing and/or walking.
- Physical activity including lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying (up to 40lbs for up to 50 feet), pushing/pulling (up to 75lbs force), reaching, gripping/pinching, standing without restriction.
- Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including but not limited to evenings, weekends, extended shifts with short notice.
