Summary of Job Purpose:
The Emergency Department Technician collaborates with the healthcare team under the direct supervision of Nurse Supervisors and RNs to provide direct patient care, maintain a clean and organized Emergency Department environment, and perform various clerical duties. The technician serves a diverse population based on the scope of services provided in the department.
Job Qualifications:
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent
- Licensure: Not Applicable
- Experience: Previous medical background and/or EMS training preferred
- Training: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification preferred
Responsibilities:
- Orients patients and families, enters registration information into the computer, and maintains accurate ER charts.
- Performs order entry tasks, including entering orders, charges, and reprinting orders as needed.
- Assumes responsibility for the admitting process when necessary.
- Ensures adequate supplies are available in the Emergency Department and restocks as needed.
- Prepares orders for central stores and performs essential ER technician skills, such as vital signs, EKGs, bandaging, setting up oxygen, finger-stick glucose tests, etc.
- Performs phlebotomies as directed by RNs.
- Ensures room readiness prior to patient use.
- Facilitates communication among patients, families, and the healthcare team by answering phones, responding to call lights, and serving as a liaison between departments.
- Participates in patient care activities, such as transporting patients, maintaining logbooks, xeroxing charts, and completing other duties assigned by supervisors.
- Maintains a clean and organized Emergency Department environment, ensuring cleanliness after patient use and restocking supplies as needed.
- Demonstrates analytical and problem-solving skills, communicating concerns to managers as necessary.
- Adheres to time and attendance policies.
- Attends educational programs related to job responsibilities offered by the hospital or external providers.
