Northern Engineering has been serving the mechanical power transmission rebuilding and machine shop needs of the Great Lakes vessel operators and other large material handling customers for over 100 years, our business is growing. We have an opening on our team for a Machinist. Our staff must be available to work when needed, 24/7 to meet the needs of our customers. Our customers count on us to minimize their down-time for critical systems and keep coming back because of the high level of service they receive from us. We offer a combination of in-shop and in-place repair options.
Job Summary
Supports the work of Machinists on a daily basis by assisting them on projects in the shop as well as at the customers locations.
Responsibilities
- Assembles, installs and tests machines to ensure proper function.
- Identifies and repairs problematic parts of a machine by running tests, making temporary repairs, or installing new parts.
- Performs preventive maintenance by identifying and correcting potential issues, removing worn out pieces and lubricating mechanical parts.
- Disassembles and inspects machinery.
- Assists Machinist in daily operations such as support in measurements, prep-work, and re-assembly.
- Reads, understands and works off blueprints.
- Must work in full compliance with the approved safety regulations.
Required Skills & Abilities
- Knowledge in standard practices in comparable manufacturing environments
- Follows directions and procedures under limited supervision
- Conducts problem-solving skills under limited supervision
- Ability to read labels, safety warnings, and guidelines
- Blueprint/schematic reading - analyze and understand blueprints, wiring schematics, layout plans, and other materials when assembling machinery
- Ability to Troubleshooting -determine problems with industrial machinery, identifying which systems are failing and what procedures or parts are needed to fix the issue
- Attention to detail and alert at all times to ensure safety
- Ability to communicate with co-workers and supervisor
- Mechanical aptitude and good mathematical skills (measuring, making calculations, and applying general geometric concepts)
- Knowledge in the use of general hand tools such as hammers, shovels, brooms, tape measures, grinders, welder, etc.
- It is important that our team members display a positive attitude about the work to be done
Qualifications
- Applicants with prior experience in similar industry preferred.
- High School Diploma or GE required.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen, background check and be eligible for TWIC card.
- Be available 24/7 to meet the emergency needs of our customers when needed - Some travel required (up to 25%).

Physical Requirements
Position requires grasping, writing, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, crawling, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, overhead work, listening and hearing ability and visual acuity. Must be able to work in tight, confined spaces, such as accessing manholes. Use of manufacturing equipment. Work in areas at times that are not environmentally controlled. Work in environment where harmful dusts, fogs, fumes, gases, etc. might be present and the use of a respirator may be required. Ability to work in inclement weather conditions. Able to move/lift/pull/push 50 lbs.
