Job Summary : The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) works closely with athletes and clinic patients to help improve performance, manage injuries, and serves as a liaison between providers, patients, coaches, and athletes. The ATC assists the care team in the Orthopedic Clinic and works firsthand with local student athletic teams. The ATC develops and maintains an injury prevention program for student athletes. They advise and counsel student athletes and patients on matters including injury prevention, conditioning, rehabilitation, training, and other related topics
Job Relationships :
- Directly responsible to Specialty Care Practice Manager or designee
- Works closely with Orthopedic providers, school athletic director and various team coaches
Occupational Hazards :
Works in the general hospital setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states.

Assist provider with documentation in patient medical record, including obtaining past medical history and other pertinent histories;Participate in training of Orthopedic Clinic back office support staff;Liaise between orthopedic providers, patients, ancillary service providers as needed to coordinate timely access to care;Responsible for ordering supplies for orthopedic clinic, includes maintaining DME inventory as needed;Provide on-site support for school athletic games as agreed upon by supervisor and in alignment with school agreement; includes evaluating sports injuries, providing first aid, conducting concussion assessment, provide reconditioning and appropriate follow-up care referral;Maintain professional relationships with students, school administration, coaches, and parents;Maintain clinic flow in partnership with providers and other clinic staff; includes obtaining patient vital signs, entering orders on behalf of providers, document in medical recordCarry out treatment plans as ordered by providerSet up for and assist with clinic procedures, provide patient education as appropriateCoordinate with surgery team, authorization team, rehabilitation team to ensure comprehensive, multidisciplinary patient careFabricate, adjust, and remove orthopedic devices (including braces, splints, casts)Provide on-site support for school athletic games as agreed upon by supervisor and in alignment with school agreement; includes evaluating sports injuries, conducting concussion assessment, and maintaining professional relationships with students, school administration, coaches, and parents.Provide education and support related to sports injuries and injury preventionKnowledge, Skills and Abilities :

Screen and assess injuries of athletes, facilitating medical referrals when appropriate;Assist in the development and implementation of a program for the prevention of injuries among student-athletes;Make decisions on “return-to-play” evaluations;Provide oversight of strength and conditioning programs and provide education and consultation to coaching staff and athletes regarding age and gender-appropriate fitness and strength training practices;Institute best practices for the management and use of the high school weight training facility;Provide assistance with proper fitting of athletic protective equipment;Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgement;Provide direct patient / athlete care in accordance with ATC scope of practice;Maintain flexibility in meeting the demands of clinic and school athletic programs;Taping / fitting durable medical equipment, apply wound dressings, suture removal, casting, splinting.Minimum Qualifications :
Experience :
Minimum one year full-time experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer in hospital or clinic setting.
Education : Bachelor’s degree
Certification : Certified by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification (NATABOC) and maintain standards established by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) role delineation.
Preferred : Experience :
Education : Master’s degree
Certification : Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist preferred; AT residency or fellowship preferred.
