Job Summary :
The Lead Laboratory Assistant is a front-line customer service representative of NIHD, and an experienced resource to support Phlebotomists and Laboratory Assistants. The Lead Laboratory Assistant is knowledgeable in all pre-analytic processes in the department and provides training to Phlebotomists and Laboratory Assistants as assigned. The Lead Laboratory Assistant also supports and rotates through Client Services, Inpatient / ER phlebotomy, and Outpatient Lab Draw areas as needed.
Job Relationships :
- Directly responsible to the Laboratory Services Manager.
- Works closely with the Laboratory Assistant Manager, Laboratory Assistants, and Phlebotomists.
- May take instruction from Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS)
Occupational Hazards :
Works in the general hospital setting. May be exposed to blood, body fluids, or tissues as well as patients in varying stages of infectious states.

Knowledge of :
Phlebotomy, specimen collection, specimen requirements / storageMonitoring pending collections and testsGeneral NIHD patient flow, billing requirements, and regulatory requirementsInvestigating quality variances, SOP variances, and resolving issues, under the consultation of a CLSThe Mission, Vision, and Values of Northern Inyo Healthcare District;NIHD policies and procedures, including Compliance Program, Code of Conduct, and Confidentiality standards;NIHD safety policies and procedures, including the Rainbow Chart, Employee Health, and Infection Prevention standards;Skills / Abilities to :
Work effectively with other NIHD staff and leaders in order to provide great customer service and solve problemsProvide guidance to Phlebotomists and Laboratory Assistants pertaining to department procedures and workflowsUse discretion to refer problems to Laboratory ManagementCommunicate effectively both verbally and in writing with NIHD staff and the public;Establish and maintain professional working relationships with NIHD staff at all levels as well as the public;Develop and maintain a high degree of maturity, integrity, and good judgement.Minimum Qualifications :
Experience :
Must have a minimum of 3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory as a Laboratory Assistant, including phlebotomyMust demonstrate a strong attention to detail and critical thinking skillsMust demonstrate ability to work as a team, and work independently with minimal supervisionEducation :
Completion of Phlebotomy Training Program including clinical rotation
High School Graduate or completion of GED
Certification :
Valid California Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) License
Valid Medical Laboratory Assistant Certification (ASCP)
Basic Lifesaving / CPR Certification within 6 months of hire
Preferred : Experience :
As a Laboratory Assistant at NIHD
Education :
Associates Degree or higher
