Distribution Fieldman
DEPARTMENT: Distribution
REPORTS TO: Distribution Crew Lead
SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm
(some flexibility with hours)
Position Summary:
The Distribution Fieldman plays a vital role in maintaining and improving the water distribution system to ensure the delivery of safe, clean, and reliable drinking water. This position involves physical labor, operating hand tools and heavy equipment, and collaborating with other departments to maintain seamless water delivery. Additionally, this position assists in the regulatory compliance and efficient operations of the District.
Essential Functions:

- Perform routine maintenance, repair, replacement, and installation tasks on the water distribution system, including:
- Water main repairs
- Valve operations and replacements
- Water service line installations and replacements
- Meter relocations
- System flushing
- Fire hydrant repairs and replacements
- Operate District vehicles, service trucks, and heavy equipment such as backhoes, excavators, bobcats, and dump trucks.
- Utilize power tools (e.g., saws, jackhammers) and hand tools.
- Conduct daily vehicle/equipment inspections.
- Complete tasks under the direction of the Crew Lead, Specialist, and/or Foreman.
- Coordinate with city authorities for tasks such as road closures, traffic flagging, and road salting.
- Maintain clean and organized work areas and ensure proper restoration after completing a job.
- Perform general maintenance, basic housekeeping, and inventory preparation (e.g., double yokes, pressure regulators, risers).
- Interact courteously with the public and customers to provide updates on water service interruptions or restoration. Redirect complaints or concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Communicate issues impacting the efficiency of operations to the Crew Lead, Foreman, and/or Supervisor.
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience.
- Background in construction or a related field is preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in using hand tools and heavy equipment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic literacy and arithmetic proficiency.
- Ability to collaborate effectively and courteously with customers and team members.
- Basic computer skills.
- Establishing and maintaining effective, respectful relationships with colleagues, peers, and workgroups.
Licensing/Certifications:
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred; must be obtained within six months of employment.
- Class IV Distribution License or willingness to obtain when eligible.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
This position requires frequent climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, pushing, reaching, standing, sitting, lifting (up to 125 pounds), and repetitive motions.
Environmental Conditions:
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, wetness, noise, vibration, and muddy/slippery conditions.
- Hazards include moving equipment, tools, chemicals, and exposure to exhaust fumes or gases during excavation.
Extended hours and overtime work may be required.
