JOB SUMMARY :

In collaboration with the CNO, the Director of Surgical Services is responsible for patient care, management, resource management, and fiscal management.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

  • Assists the DON to promote leadership growth of nursing staff.
  • Maintains a cost-efficient department : i.e., active in the budget process, conscious of the financial aspect of the organization.
  • Has financial accountability for the surgical services department. Performs case reimbursement reviews, cost and revenue analytics, monthly budget variance reviews.
  • Collaborates with the Quality Department to maintain clinical safety and service excellence. Monitors surgical quality metrics and trigger reviews.
  • Ensures proper infection control practices in Surgical Services Department.
  • Ensure effective communication throughout the Surgical Services Department and organization.
  • Works collaboratively with the Surgical Services Outpatient Clinic staff and providers.
  • Motivate staff to meet nursing and organizational objectives through supporting the vision and goals of the organization.
  • Has a presence in the community in promoting the organization.
  • Maintain knowledge of licensing and accreditation standards and incorporates regulations in all aspects of the provisions of care.
  • Develop policies and procedures, nursing standard-of-patientcare, and standards of nursing practice that are consistent with current nursing research findings, and nationally recognized professional standards in concert with other members of the nursing staff.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources to develop and implement strategies focused on the recruitment and retention of personnel. Actively involved in the decision on the hiring of personnel.
  • Implements programs to measure, assess, and improve the quality of patient care delivered to patients.
  • Collaborate with management, medical staff, and clinical areas in planning, promoting, and conducting organization wide performance improvement activities.
  • Develop and integrate processes to improve patient experience from outpatient through procedure and post operatively.
  • Responsible for creating an environment that encourages professional growth and development of all staff and foster the recruitment of new employees. Direct and oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of orientation and continuing education programs.
  • Represent nursing and interpret the mission and philosophy of the organization and patients care services division to trustees, employees, medical staff, patients, families, and the community.
  • Evaluates and implements service line best practices for surgical service patients.
  • Organize, chair, and participate in pertinent staff and committee meetings.

Requirements

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE :

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current RN license by Maine state Board of Nursing, BSN required.
  • Has 5 to 10 years' progressive nursing experience, including satisfactory administrative experience, and demonstrates leadership / administrative ability.
  • Master's degree in nursing, business, or other related field or in the process of receiving preferred.
  • WORKER TRAITS :

  • Verbal ability is required to express ideas and views effectively when speaking to groups, hospital directors, and personnel, and to gather and analyze data and prepare reports.
  • Numerical ability is required to evaluate statistical data and to make various computations in planning departmental operations and budget.
  • Organizational ability to plan and control the entire activities of the Surgical Services Department and personnel activities.
  • Ability to relate to people to win their confidence and establish support for programs.
  • High level of physical and emotional stamina.
