Essential Functions
- Performs venipunctures and skin punctures per established protocols.
- Documents all tests ordered in the LIS.
- Answers the telephone promptly and courteously.
- Files reports.
- Obtains missing physician signatures.
- Sorts out lab reports and delivers to appropriate locations.
- Orders central and office supply items.
- Stocks shelves and phlebotomy baskets as needed.
- Logs and packages pathology specimens for transport.
- Performs pathology charges.
- Follows universal precautions and all other safety and health policies.
- Recognizes and reports all patient and employee safety issues.
- Maintains educational training/professional development and competency.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Attends pertinent in-services to effectively perform job duties.
- Completes all required in-services on HealthStream.
- Maintains a professional and friendly demeanor with patients and hospital staff.
- Maintains the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of our patients.
- Performs such related duties not listed herein but deemed in the best interest of the hospital.
- Performs waived testing - as outlined on the competency form.
- Subs weekly stock organisms in microbiology.
- Sets up cultures as needed in microbiology.
- High school education is required, or equivalent.
- Experience is not essential, although worker usually requires approximately three months training in a clinical laboratory to be capable of normal productivity.
- This on-the-job training will be provided.
- Yearly competency must be completed to maintain skills.
- Finger dexterity required to manipulate small objects, such as test tubes and microscope slides during cleaning and sterilization duties.
- Clerical perception is necessary to sort and file reports and records and to avoid errors in transposition when posting information from one record to another.
- Verbal ability is necessary for reading comprehension in filing or when answering the telephone.
