What are the responsibilities and job description for the LIVESTRONG Fitness Instructor position at Northern Middlesex YMCA?
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Instructor will empower cancer survivors to improve their quality of life through exercise and building positive relationships. Instructors will modify and progress exercises based on everyone's specific needs thus providing a safe and appropriate exercise program for each program participant.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Facilitate LIVESTRONG at the YMCA classes in accordance with established guidelines
- Lead small groups of adult cancer survivors in an exercise program as well as promoting relationships with and between the participants
- Keeps attendance and completes associated paperwork following each session
- Must be an exceptional listener and engage in active listening with participants
- Has detailed knowledge of health behavior and the difficulties associated with making a lifestyle change
- Has a detailed knowledge of cancer including common treatments and side effects as it relates to exercise and required modifications
- Appropriately provide and implement sessions in accordance with National and State standards and guidelines
- Deliver the LIVESTRONG curriculum as set forward by YMCA of YUSA
- Report accidents and injuries as well as complete incident reports
- Set up and breakdown equipment as needed
- Encourage group participation and interaction using open-ended questions and facilitate commitment and retention of participants
- Be accessible to participants both before and after sessions to answer questions and follow-up on any questions you cannot answer during class time
REQUIRED TRAININGS/CERTIFICATIONS
- Current CPR/AED certification
- LIVESTRONG at the YMCA Instructor Certification
SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:
- Must possess strong communication, customer service and interpersonal skills
- Must possess a running knowledge of general overall health and fitness as well as exercise equipment and its proper use
- Ideally has knowledge and experience in fitness, and exercise programming
- Must be able to work as an integral member of a staff team.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with adults, and special populations

- While performing functions of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk and hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25lbs. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
