Job Summary
The Immigration Legal Assistant will provide crucial support to the Immigration Unit, assisting attorneys and accredited representatives with case management, client communication, legal document preparation, and outreach efforts. This role plays a key part in supporting vulnerable immigrant populations and ensuring efficient and timely case processing.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate calls, emails, and other inquiries from clients in collaboration with the Immigration Intake Specialist.
- Assist accredited representatives and attorneys with the preparation of immigration forms for submission to USCIS, EOIR, and DHS.
- Notify clients of case processing and updates per instructions from attorneys and accredited representatives.
- Provide interpretation during appointments and translate legal documents from English to Spanish and vice versa.
- Maintain, create, and close client files in compliance with organizational standards.
- Communicate with clients to gather required information and documentation for case preparation.
- Input client data into case management software to process immigration forms and track case progress.
- Support other departments when a client's needs exceed the scope of the Immigration Unit.
- Represent the organization at outreach events, providing information about services offered by the Immigration Unit.
- Assist with intake duties when the Immigration Intake Specialist is unavailable or out of the office.
- Participate in weekly meetings and attend immigration law training sessions as needed.
Qualifications
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) required.
- At least one year of experience in the legal field; past immigration law experience is preferred.
- High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
- Valid Driver’s License required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Strong time management and organizational skills.
- Empathy and cultural competency when working with immigrant populations from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds for outreach events, with assistance as needed.
Work Environment
The NNLA office is located at 299 S. Arlington Ave., Reno, NV. There may be opportunities for remote work depending on organizational needs.
