What are the responsibilities and job description for the Landscape Garden Center - Assistant Manager position at Northern Nurseries?
This position full-time, year-round position is responsible for overseeing and directing the operations, labor, transportation, customer service, and maintenance functions of the Distribution Center. In addition to management skills, the position requires a "hands-on" approach including, but not limited to loading/unloading trucks, yard maintenance, and equipment operation.
Responsibilities:
- Manage the daily activities of the labor force as it relates to yard layout, product placement, loading, unloading, organizing and scheduling.
- Prepare the daily priority report and assign duties to each employee.
- Hire and manage all seasonal personnel.
- Maintain labor budget ensuring that overtime control targets are met.
- Manage and schedule the receiving of incoming plant material and stock, ensuring quality control checks and accurate counts.
- Maintain receiving records from purchase orders and submit them daily to the Office Manager for input into the inventory system.
- Ensure the timely placement of product signage.
- Maintain and assume complete responsibility for all site driver activities including: Hiring / Terminations, Training, Driver Logs, D.O.T. compliance, Physicals and drug test compliance, Safety compliance
- Responsible for all Company trucks and nursery equipment including: Registrations / Permits, Maintenance scheduling & record keeping, Mileage records, Supplies purchasing, Scheduling rentals
- Ensure proper horticultural care and maintenance of all nursery stock including fertilization, pesticide, herbicide applications, irrigation, mulching, etc.
- Manage consistent, efficient operation of the site irrigation system.
- Monitor and assist in deployment of yard sales and service personnel to ensure superior customer service throughout all product areas.
- Assist in routine selling activities on a daily basis.
- Oversee inventory control processes (spot counts, inventory turn goals, mark-downs, scrap reduction) in order to maximize site effectiveness.
- Maintain all site housekeeping operations to maintain a professional, safe and welcoming shopping environment for our customers.
- Assist the Site Manager in recruiting, training, succession planning, and other areas of employee development.
- Assume the duties and responsibilities of the Site Manager in their absence.
- Any other duties that may be reasonably assigned.
Requirements:
- Retail, wholesale, or landscape, horticultural operations management experience.
- Managing crews, teams, and personnel
- High level of organizational and planning skills with specific ability to prioritize activities
- Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with seasonal work demands.
- Excellent oral communication and listening skills.
- Must possess, or acquire and maintain functionality of, a Class B or Class A CDL license.
- This position requires physicality; must be able to lift up to 50lbs unassisted.
