Landscape Garden Center - Assistant Manager

Northern Nurseries in Cicero, NY, a division of The Robert Baker Companies, is a network of horticultural wholesale distribution centers. We are seeking a full-time, year-round Assistant Manager for a career with the largest landscape supply company in the Northeast.

This full-time, year-round position is responsible for overseeing and directing the operations, labor, transportation, customer service, and maintenance functions of the Distribution Center. In addition to management skills, the position requires a "hands-on" approach including, but not limited to loading/unloading trucks, yard maintenance, and equipment operation.

Responsibilities:

• Manages the daily activities of the labor force as it relates to yard layout, product placement, loading, unloading, organizing and scheduling.
• Prepares the Daily Priority Report prior to the arrival of all subordinates to include laborers, associate managers, and truck drivers and distributes it to each employee.
• Hires and manages all seasonal personnel.
• Maintains labor budget ensuring that overtime control targets are met.
• Manages and schedules the receiving of incoming plant material, ensuring quality control checks and accurate counts.
• Maintains receiving records from purchase orders and timely submission to Office Supervisor for input into the inventory system.
• Ensure the timely placement of product signage.
• Maintains and assumes complete responsibility for all site driver activities including: hiring / terminations, training, driver logs, D.O.T. compliance, physicals and drug test compliance, safety compliance.
• Responsible for all Company trucks and nursery equipment including: registrations / permits, maintenance scheduling & record keeping, mileage records, supplies purchasing, scheduling rentals.
• Ensures proper horticultural care and maintenance of all nursery stock including fertilization, pesticide, herbicide applications.
• Manages consistent, efficient operation of the site irrigation system.
• Monitors and assists in deployment of yard sales and service personnel to ensure superior customer service throughout all product areas.
• Assists in routine selling activities on a daily basis.
• Oversees inventory control processes (spot counts, inventory turn goals, mark-downs, scrap reduction) in order to maximize site effectiveness.
• Maintains all site housekeeping operations both outside and inside the facility, to maintain an attractive, professional, and safe shopping environment for customers.
• Assist the Site Manager in recruiting, training, succession planning, and other areas of employee development.
• Assume the duties and responsibilities of the Site Manager in their absence.
• Any other duties that may be reasonably assigned.

Requirements:

• 3-5 years retail, wholesale, or landscape, horticultural operations management experience.
• High level of organizational and planning skills with specific ability to prioritize activities.
• Ability and willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with seasonal work demands.
• Ability to work independently yet take a lead role in a team-oriented structure.
• Excellent oral communication and listening skills.
