Description
Northern Sierra Forestry Services is a Nevada City based professional forestry and natural resource management company focusing on professional forestry consulting, timber harvest plans, federal contracts, and other various forest management plans. Most projects are based in Nevada, Placer, Yuba, Sierra and El Dorado counties, however travel to other project locations may be required. As a Seasonal Forestry Technician with NSFS, the candidate will work on a team of forestry technicians and under the direction of the Forestry Crew Lead, Registered Professional Forester or Project Manager to prepare and implement various forestry plans and projects. This is a seasonal position with the possibility of permanent employment dependent upon performance and future workload.
We are currently seeking 2-3 forestry technicians for the 2025 field season (approximately April to November).
Essential duties:
· The Forestry Technician will be responsible for flagging and designating timber cutting unit boundaries using paint, marking trees, and assisting with forest inventories.
· Candidates must be in good physical condition with the ability to hike and navigate in steep, mountainous terrain and in adverse weather conditions daily.
· Candidates must have a good driving record and a valid driver's license and be capable of operating 4x4 vehicles in rough terrain.
· Candidates must be able to work with a diverse team.
Desired Experience and Skills
· General knowledge of the local environment, including common forest tree species.
· Previous experience in logging or working on a timber crew.
· Students working toward a degree in forestry are encouraged to apply.
· THP preparation and layout
· Use of a compass, D-Tape, prism, clinometer, hypsometer and other forestry measurement tools.
· Navigation and orienteering using paper maps.
· Experience using ESRI Field Maps
Compensation
Compensation is dependent on prior experience and qualifications. Hourly wages range from $23/hr to $28/hr.
Environmental
Employees will be exposed to harsh environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Employees must be able to navigate in steep and difficult terrain, including strenuous hiking. Employees will be required to climb, crawl, and hike through steep and brushy terrain.
Required Personal Protective Equipment:
Employees will be required to furnish essential clothing necessary to perform field work safely, including but not limited to sturdy work boots and rain gear. Employees must be willing to always wear the required personal protective equipment and be dressed appropriately for the conditions. High visibility clothing, eye protection, ear protection, hard hats, and hand protection will be provided by NSFS.
