What are the responsibilities and job description for the 9-Month Teaching Faculty (Occupational Therapy Assistant) position at Northern VA Community College?
The primary responsibility of a faculty member at NOVA is to provide quality instruction. NOVA Occupational Therapy Assistant faculty are expected to excel in teaching strategies and classroom management that fully engage students in a classroom, laboratory, or online platform, and engage students in individual conferences and related activities. NOVA faculty help students develop their interests and abilities to their fullest capacity in order to build stronger citizens within the community. All faculty must be available to teach day, evening, and weekend classes at any of the College’s campuses or off-site locations.
Duties and Tasks:
Full-time teaching faculty members are responsible for teaching courses offered in traditional, hybrid, and distance learning formats. Full-time 9-month teaching faculty carry a normal teaching load of 12-15 credit hours and 15-20 contact hours per semester. Faculty members also serve as faculty advisors, serve on division/campus/college committees, participate in curriculum development, and maintain currency in their discipline.
Essential Functions:
NOVA faculty are expected to meet assigned classes regularly; submit required records and reports in a timely manner; teach the courses using established texts; conduct requisite student conferences; hold required office hours; attend to assigned divisional and college duties; contribute to the development of the program of instruction; adhere to the statement on professional ethics in accordance with college policies, procedures, and regulations; answer emails in a responsible fashion; maintain current competence in the particular discipline or field of specialization; and advise students.
Employees must reside in DC, Maryland or Virginia.
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.
- The ability to effectively teach Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) concepts in the classroom and in the laboratory.
- Ability to use technology to enhance classroom instruction.
- Ability to use on-line resources and Learning Management Systems.
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
- Ability to supervise students in the clinic.
- Bachelor’s degree in the teaching field. Qualifying academic degrees must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
- National Board of Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) national certification. Certification must be active and is required as a condition for hire and for continued employment if hired.
- Active, unexpired Commonwealth of Virginia licensure as an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assistant, with no restrictions, is required as a condition for hire and for continued employment if hired. If current licensure is with another state or is not active, then you must be able obtain or renew licensure with the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- A minimum of two (2) years of full-time clinical practice experience as an occupational therapy practitioner. Part-time experience will be converted to its full-time equivalency.
- Two (2) years of clinical experience in the areas of neuro, pediatrics, and adult physical disabilities.
- Experience with Canvas Learning Management System for teaching.
- Experience teaching occupational therapy or occupational therapy assisting in a postsecondary and/or community college environment.
- Experience with and preparation for teaching culturally, linguistically, socio-economically, and academically diverse students at the college-level.
- Education, training and/or experience with teaching hybrid or online courses.
- Current membership with American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).
