What are the responsibilities and job description for the Academic Success Coach position at Northern VA Community College?
May be required to occasionally travel to off-campus work sites such as other campuses, college sites, or local universities.
Eligible for one day telework following probationary period and approval of supervisor.
The Academic Success Coach reports to the Associate Dean of Student Success and provides academic success services to students on academic warning and probation through appointments and group sessions. The Academic Success Coach proactively engages students on academic warning and/or probation through diverse programming and communications.
Duties and Tasks:
- Engage in direct interactions, relationship building, case management, and deliver programming in support of NOVA students needing holistic social, emotional, and academic support.
- Keep accurate, up to date notes with the appropriate student tracking software.
- Actively manage a caseload of “at risk” students, including those on academic probation, through individual meetings, group sessions, Navigate campaigns, and referrals to college and external resources.
- Facilitate workshops for faculty members, staff, students, and prospective students on a variety of academic success topics.
- Meet regularly with colleagues on the college-wide Academic Success Working Group to actively support policy and process improvement in collaboration with central student services.
- Assist in the writing of the academic success newsletter/blog/website/
- CANVAS site.
- Collect data, track outcomes, and produce reports about students on academic probation.
- Provide robust and thorough academic advising to caseload and to the general student population.
- Participate in walk-in advising.
- Serve as a liaison to advising teams.
- Participate in College task forces, pathway councils, leadership committees, and working groups.
- Participates in regular professional development as required and/or relevant to the assigned work.
Special Assignments:
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of student development theories , best advising and coaching practices.
- Skilled in providing academic coaching and advising to “at-risk” students and an ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to discern appropriate instances of confidentiality and effectively communicate this with students.
- Ability to promote inclusive coaching sessions and a campus climate respectful of diversity and multiculturalism.
- Ability to utilize interpersonal and problem-solving skills to collaborate and negotiate with students, faculty, staff, parents, members of the community and university representatives.
- Ability to de-escalate high emotion situations and mental health emergencies, and appropriately involve other college resources and supports, making appropriate referrals.
- Knowledge of relevant federal, state, VCCS, and college policies and regulations including the Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA), Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Title IX, and
- VAWA/SaVE, and Clery legislation.
- Ability to understand, disseminate, interpret, and communicate college policies and regulations using approved and accepted processes and practices.
- Demonstrate outstanding oral and written communication skills, including the development of letters,emails, and workshop materials, and the ability to present to and instruct large and small audiences.
- Ability to design, implement, and evaluate programs and projects.
- Ability to collaborate on the development, assessment and reporting of student learning outcomes and other assessment measures.
- Ability to conduct responsibilities while demonstrating excellent customer service skills.
- Knowledge of processes and policies for working with students on academic warning and probation.
- Knowledge of, and skill in, computer usage including Microsoft Office, e-mail, student information systems, CANVAS, ticket tracking software, Adobe Acrobat Reader, social media, and use of the Internet to complete research.
- Ability to understand and conceptualize data needs and utilize database systems to generate reports.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a timely manner in a fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience providing advising and/or coaching to college students or prospective college students.
- Teaching or workshop facilitation experience.
- Experience with event planning, implementation, and evaluation.
- Experience with educational program support.
- Experience in academic success coaching or counseling.
- Bilingual with proficiency in a foreign language frequently spoken in Northern Virginia.
- Experience utilizing Navigate and PeopleSoft or other student information systems.
