Job Description:
The Associate Dean of Student Success is a NOVA Student Services leader who reports to the Dean of Student Success. The Associate Dean is responsible for providing supervision of the campus counseling staff, services to include academic advising and counseling specialty areas (academic success, behavioral intervention, advocacy center and transfer), and relevant student programming (for the campus and college). The Associate Dean collaborates to provide leadership for the walk-in campus advising services to include responsibilities of indirect supervision and support of academic advisors. The Associate Dean is the lead academic administrator for the Student Development (SDV) course sections offered by the respective campus. The Associate Dean collaborates with the Office of Wellness and Mental Health and provides direct supervision and support to the BIT Counselor, as well support to the Office of Wellness and Mental Health in staffing cases.

Duties and Tasks:
  • Handles the administrative oversight and operational management of the campus Counseling Services personnel.
  • Manages all aspects of the Student Development courses affiliated with the campus (regular, NOVA Online, Dual Enrollment, discipline-specific, etc.) including the hiring of faculty, training audits, class scheduling, addressing student and faculty concerns, observations, evaluations, and budget. Review and process enrollment-related requests to include course repeats, grade changes and late enrollment.
  • Coordinates campus counseling services to include service delivery and programming.
  • With the College Associate Director of Advising assigned to the campus, handles the coordination of the walk-in academic advising and the intake/triage of campus services. Communicates with the Associate Director for the campus regarding coverage needs for students and other operational matters.
  • Coordinates the assignment of students to counselors (including students on academic probation) and provides guidance to counselors regarding their caseload management (working in collaboration with designated College staff).
  • Supervises of the work of the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) counselor(s), addresses urgent mental health and other emergencies, serves as a back-up to the BIT counselors and responds to cases assigned by the Office of Wellness and Mental Health.
  • Provides leadership for the Campus Financial Stability services and Advocacy Center.
  • Organizes assessments/evaluations, data collection and reporting for programs, student interactions and faculty and staff accountability.
  • Manages budget for the Counseling department, Student Development instruction and other funding as determined by the Dean of Student Success.
  • Serves as the Dean of Student Success in the absence of the Dean and upon request, provides support to other areas to include Student Life, Open Computer Lab, Testing and Tutoring.
  • Serves on campus committees and participates in initiatives as requested by the Dean or Campus Provost.
  • Collaborates with campus academic division deans and other campus leadership on matters related to course scheduling, student advising and other student needs. Serves as a point of contact for campus administrators for troubleshooting matters or providing referrals.
  • Must be able to travel to all NOVA campuses and work virtually per the campus or division request. Position requires some evening/weekend hours.
  • Makes regular requests from employees for updates and input on college decisions and share feedback with supervisors for inclusion in the NOVA Brief.

Employees must reside in DC, Maryland or Virginia.
Minimum Qualifications:
KSAs
Knowledge of:
  • Theories of counseling, human development, career development, college student development, and multicultural counseling theory;
  • Policies, processes and procedures related to counseling services and course instruction;
  • Community college research and best practices;
  • College readiness research, persistence/retention and completion research and best practices for “traditional” and returning adult students;
  • Evaluation and assessment methods including analyzing and interpreting data;
  • Achieving the Dream (ATD) mission and goals
Skills in:
  • Providing coordination, supervision, and leadership to a diverse team of professionals;
  • Computer and data literacy skills;
  • Organizational leadership and effective team building skills;
  • Providing academic, career, and personal counseling to adolescents and adults;
  • Written and oral communication skills, case management skills, including tracking of student caseload and the collection and reporting of data.
  • Computer usage, to include Microsoft Office, e-mail, student information systems, Adobe Acrobat Reader, and other technology utilized by the College.
Ability to:
  • Independently plan and coordinate a variety of programs and projects;
  • Develop, disseminate, interpret and enforce campus and program policies and regulations;
  • Maintain an office and program climate respectful of diversity and multiculturalism;
  • Maintain confidentiality; maintain a professional approach to decision making;
  • Respond creatively and flexibly to changing needs and conditions;
  • Work occasionally at, and travel regularly to, various NOVA campuses;
  • Collaborate effectively with college personnel, including administrators, counselors, and staff;
  • Work in a fast-paced environment with a diverse student population; work occasional evenings and weekend hours.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Counseling, College Student Affairs, Higher Education, Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a master's degree with at least 18 graduate semester hours in counseling coursework. Qualifying degree and/or coursework must be awarded by and/or completed with a regionally accredited institution.
  • Significant amount of experience in a college or university setting in an advising or counseling capacity.

  • Extensive experience with allied health and nursing students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of post-secondary transition, academic advising, career and transfer planning, crisis intervention, and serving minoritized student populations.
  • Experience as a leader or participant on a behavioral intervention team.
  • Management/supervisory experience.
