General Description:
This position is responsible for serving and protecting NVCC campuses, off-site centers, and property through crime prevention activities. Activities include, but are not limited to patrolling, investigating (reported and suspected) criminal activity, and enforcing State traffic laws. Law Enforcement Officers also interact with the public in a fair and impartial manner, regardless of situation, while on-duty at NVCC campuses and centers. NOVA Officers have full authority to enforce State laws and regulations as found in all other police departments within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
The NOVA Police Department is established as a College-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules and duties dependent on the needs of the Department and/or staff professional development.

Duties and Tasks:
- This position conducts thorough criminal investigations, background investigations, investigates suspected criminal activity, and investigates other complaints.
- Ensures security for College and personal property at the College through crime prevention activities and patrol.
- Ensure safety of the community through the enforcement of State laws and College regulations. This is accomplished by patrol efforts, by possible shift rotation, by interacting with the public in a fair and impartial manner regardless of situation, and by enforcing the laws and regulations through use of the same police powers as found in all other police departments in cities, towns, and counties in the Commonwealth.
Must be able to pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check.
KSAs:
- Knowledge of the principles and techniques of law enforcement, investigation, security, crime detection and prevention.
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the use of police equipment and weaponry.
- Ability to demonstrate an understanding of the Commonwealth of Virginia laws, local ordinances, and College policies.
- Must meet physical and mental job demands.
- Ability to maintain DCJS certification.
- Ability to effectively testify in court proceedings.
- Ability to follow instructions.
- Ability to speak and understand English.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Good computer skills.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must be a United States citizen
- Must have certification as a Law Enforcement Officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services or eligible for reinstatement
- Licensed driver with insurable driving record
- Law enforcement experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Successfully pass background investigation
- Experience investigating sexual assault cases.
- Experience in crime scene processing.
- Experience with the Jeanne Clery Act.
- Experience in campus police setting.
- Bilingual
