What are the responsibilities and job description for the Peer Assistant for Six Stones Wellness Center (12-18 hours) - 2 Positions position at Northern Valley Catholic Social Service?
We are looking for two Peer Assistants to serve at the Six Stones Wellness Center. This position will work under the direction of the Program Supervisor and will support individuals on their journey to recovery and wellness. Peer Assistants support a range of services aimed at fostering physical, emotional, and mental well-being in a supportive and inclusive environment. Peer Assistants play a vital role in providing support, guidance, and encouragement to individuals striving to achieve their recovery goals. Drawing from their own lived experience Peer Assistants will serve as a role model and advocate, helping clients navigate challenges and celebrate successes along the way.
Examples of Duties:
- Peer Support: Offer empathetic listening and understanding to individuals participating in recovery programs
- Provide peer counseling and mentoring on a one-to-one basis, either over the telephone or in person
- Role Modeling: Share personal experiences of recovery and wellness to inspire hope and demonstrate that recovery is possible
- Advocacy: Advocate for clients’ needs and rights within the wellness center and the broader community
- Resource Navigation: Assist clients in accessing relevant resources, such as support groups, employment assistance, and educational opportunities
- Provide linkage to crisis services if appropriate
- Community Engagement: Facilitate group activities, workshops, and events that promote community outreach and collaboration
- Educate peers/families about coping skills and self-care strategies
- Documentation: Maintain accurate records of client interactions and progress, adhering to confidentiality and privacy protocols
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other staff members, including case managers, and volunteers, to ensure holistic support for clients
- Attend regular support staff meetings
- Continued Learning: Stay informed about best practices in peer support and recovery-oriented services through training and professional development opportunities
Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED; additional education may be helpful but is not required. Certification or training in peer support services, optional.
Lived experience with mental health challenges, substance use disorder, or other recovery journeys. Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish trust with diverse individuals. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Empathy, compassion, and a nonjudgmental attitude toward others. Ability to maintain professional boundaries and handle sensitive information with discretion. Familiarity with county mental health systems and services. Commitment to self-care and personal wellness practices. Ability to work in environments with moderate noise levels, including conversations, background music. Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in challenging or emotionally charged situations. Punctuality and regular attendance. Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position during shift. Must be able to move freely around the Center, including standing, walking, bending and reaching. Basic phone skills. Must be able to maintain a clean and sanitary environment for clients and staff, including proper disposal of waste and regular cleaning. Must be able to adhere to process protocol including safety. Moves equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. Basic computer skills including ability to use email and access online trainings.
Work Schedule: Variable 12-18 hours between Monday - Friday: 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM
