Job Summary
The Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA NoVA) is seeking a full-time, local Membership Experience Coordinator. We are a professional membership association that has over 1,200 architect and designer members and our mission is to activate the region’s architecture community by supporting our members, advocating for the profession, and amplifying the power of design. This new position will work with chapter staff and volunteer members. The Member Experience Coordinator plays a crucial role in enhancing the overall experience of our members. This position focuses on providing exceptional customer service, fostering strong relationships, and ensuring that all member interactions are positive and productive.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Engage new members through a variety of methods including welcome letters, surveys, and new member events.
- Implement annual membership recruitment and retention campaigns for individuals, unassigned members, and allied members to ensure a high rate of renewal and appropriate growth of new members.
- Ensure that all applications, processing, record keeping and reporting of memberships are done accurately and in a timely manner.
- Research other professional membership organizations for recruiting and retention best practices.
- Maintain up-to-date content on the AIA Northern Virginia website in coordination with the Executive Director.
- Coordinate content for chapter e-publications in collaboration with other staff.
- Work with committees to coordinate events and attend committee meetings as needed.
- Serve as the first face/voice of the association, main phone and through AIA Northern Virginia’s general email account, responding to member and public requests for information.
- Manage the online pre-event registration and program attendance for all AIA Northern Virginia’s programs, including reporting and fulfillment of continuing education credits for members after the event.
- Manage AIA Northern Virginia’s online job board and respond to requests for new listings, changes or assistance.
- Responsible for regularly updating AIA Northern Virginia’s online event calendar listings.
- Manage the online member directories.
The Ideal Candidate:
- Thrives in the world of membership, with at least 2 years of proven success in recruitment and retention, ideally within professional associations or non-profits.
- Has a track record that speaks volumes – past achievements in campaign development and implementation are a must.
- Has a superpower of data analysis and wields it with expertise to inform strategic decisions.
- Makes communication an art form – writing persuasively and connecting authentically with diverse audiences.
- Has a forte for building relationships – fostering trust and collaboration with ease.
- Has a passion that is ignited by the AIA Northern Virginia mission– believing in the transformative power of architecture and its impact on our communities.

- Can work independently, and reliably, either in person, or remotely.
- Is willing to travel around the region to meet members, staff events, and visit architecture firms.
- Has a Bachelor’s Degree in marketing, business administration, public relations, communications, or related discipline; or, two to five years of work experience in a related field.
This position is full-time at 40 hours a week and while we are working fully remote without a brick and mortar office, qualified candidates must be local to Northern Virginia in order to conduct site visits, access supplies from storage unit, visit architecture firms, provide onsite support for all chapter-wide events. Most work should be completed between the hours of 8AM and 6PM, Monday through Friday. Some events and programs are held in the evenings and on weekends, where attendance and support will be required.
