SUMMARY
Northline Seafoods is a growing seafood processing company looking for an experienced and motivated Assistant Deck Manager to assist the Deck Manager on board our freezer barge. The Assistant Deck Manager will help in leading our extensive deck crew through pre-season preparations in Bellingham, in-season operations in Bristol Bay and post-season wrap up. The position will have a heavy emphasis on supporting the purchasing and offloading of salmon in support of overall production goals. The role may be expanded to include an off-season function in the final processing of Bristol Bay salmon in Bellingham, WA. As we grow, we’re looking for an all-hands-on-deck perspective.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Primarily responsible for assisting the Deck Manager in oversight of the offloading of fish from tenders and direct purchasing from our buy lines. This position will also support the loading/unloading of freight pre-season, in-season, and post-season.
- Assist in oversight of the buy line managers, tender offload managers, net and freight coordinators and the support vessel operator.
- Assist Deck Manager to ensure that the barge has adequate deck supplies by working with the purchasing team pre-season.
- Assist in supervising the loading, unloading and proper stowage/lashing of all cargo on the barge.
- Assist Deck Manager in training the deck crew in safe and proper line handling, crane operations, fish purchasing and offloading.
- Keep deck gear and storage areas clean, organized and in a safe and seaworthy condition.
- Ensure the deck crew operates in an efficient and safe manner with an emphasis on a zero-accident mentality.
- Assist with coordinating with shore support, vessel manager and fleet managers on scheduling of tenders/boats.
- Assist Deck Manager in maintaining constant line of communication with support tug during the season.
- Ensure the deck crew maintains proper records, particularly regarding fish purchasing and services.
- Ensure that all purchases are recorded correctly and that office personnel receive paperwork in a timely manner.
- Assist in executing all safety training and documentation as required by local, state and federal regulations, with emphasis on OSHA and Coast Guard requirements.
- All other duties as assigned.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of 5 years experience as a deck hand with emphasis on fish purchasing and tender offloading.Pref
- AB Seaman endorsement highly preferred.
- Knowledge of principles and methods for safely moving numerous types of cargo at sea.
- Knowledge of Bristol Bay operations and servicing a large fleet of tenders and fishing boats highly preferred.
- Crane and forklift experience is a must for this role.
- Advanced knowledge on appropriate use of emergency equipment located on the barge.
- Ability to solve problems and make clear rational decisions in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to train and support a staff of approximately 14 deck hands and assistants.
- Ability to complete duties with minimal supervision.
- Ability to routinely work 12 hour shifts while occasionally working 16 during peak season.
- Positive, all-hands-on-deck attitude.
- Must be available to help with pre-season work beginning in April, as well as the full season in Bristol Bay (June-mid August), with post season work as needed.

This job operates primarily on a barge at sea in Bristol Bay and at the dock in Bellingham, WA. This role routinely uses equipment common in transferring and moving cargo including cranes, lines, slings, spreader bars, etc. Additionally, this position will require advanced knowledge of fish pump setup and maintenance. Employee must be able stand, walk and generally navigate a wet and cold barge environment for long periods of time. Employee must be able to navigate tight spaces and climb multiple flights of stairs without assistance. Ability to lift 50 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance. This is an at-sea position and employee will be exposed to various weather conditions.
