What are the responsibilities and job description for the Funeral Director and Embalmer position at Northport Funeral & Cremation Service?
Funeral Director/Embalmer will oversee, direct, and coordinate all aspects of funeral services including body preparation, visitation, services, burials, and cremations, while providing caring support and advice to families and friends of the deceased.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Maintains professionalism and the highest standard of confidentiality
- Coordinates arrangements for the funeral that are respectful, professional, timely, and sensitive
- Provides knowledgeable and caring support to family and friends of the deceased
- Addresses and explains the costs of the funeral with family, options for disposition of the remains, and ensure the statement of goods is completed accurately
- Ensures paperwork is filed in a timely and orderly manner, consult with the family to obtain accurate and necessary information for completion. (i.e., death certificates)
- Become familiar with General Price List, Casket Price List, and merchandise pricing.
- Order monuments, markers, and any special requests of the family
- Take first calls and coordinates the transfer of the body or remains to the funeral home.
- Provides instructions to the funeral attendant(s) regarding the arrangements of services and any special
instructions
- Update prep room case log and clean prep room after each embalming
- Provide toe tags before and after each embalming
- Complete prep room checklist (located on prep room door)
- Inventory preparation room supplies
- File vital statistic information once a month
- Schedules clergy and pallbearers and answer any questions about their specific duties
- Schedule arrangements with crematories, cemeteries, and any other third party, as necessary
- Process insurance claims, if needed
- Maintain preneed insurance license (required within 1 year of employment)
- Oversees the issuance of death notices, obituaries, and related paperwork to government agencies and preferred newspapers or other appropriate media.
- Follow up with families within 2 weeks after service
- Provide office and administrative assistance, such as answering phones, filing, and greeting families
- Performs other related duties as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to manage distressing and stressful situations with sensitivity and care
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Thorough understanding of methods for comforting people during grief
- Thorough understanding of laws related to funerals and funeral arrangements
- Ability to promptly and accurately execute required legal paperwork
- Ability to perform mortuary services
- Detail-oriented and extremely organized
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software
Education and Experience:
- At least two years of college or vocational school required with coursework in mortuary science
- Maintain Funeral Director and Embalmer license according to state requirements
- At least two years of funeral home experience required
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to traverse a variety of locations and terrains in all weather conditions
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
These are an outline of duties & responsibilities of a funeral director/embalmer. Other duties may be assigned by the
Owners and Office Manager to support the daily operations at Northport Funeral & Cremation Service, as needed.

Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour
Schedule:
- 8 hour shift
- Monday to Friday
- On call
- Overtime
- Weekends as needed
Supplemental Pay:
- Commission pay
