Requirements
- Must meet the qualifications for a Paraprofessional:
- Obtain a high school diploma or equivalent and have two years of work experience with children or completed two years of coursework in a related field, or upon employment complete within 60 calendar days of hire training specific to the assigned student population and job duties as they relate to the academic and behavioral progress of students
- Complete two years of study at an institution of higher education; or
- Obtain an associate’s (or higher) degree; or
- Meet a rigorous standard of quality and be able to demonstrate, through a formal state or local academic assessment, knowledge of and the ability to assist in instructing, reading, writing, and mathematics (or, as appropriate, reading readiness, writing, readiness, and mathematics readiness).

- Must be willing to learn strategies in working with children with challenging behaviors
Job Responsibilities
- Provides one on one direct behavioral and academic intervention with children/youth in the general education classroom.
- Follows behavior plan for student as written by teacher.
- Follows academic plan as indicated by teacher.
- Serves as a positive role model for the child/youth.
- Provides consistency and structure for child.
- Provides immediate behavioral reinforcements.
- Provides appropriate de-escalation strategies.
- Assists the child/youth to engage in, or remain engaged in, appropriate activities.
- Helps to minimize the child/youth’s impulsive behavior.
- Helps to increase the child/youth’s social and educational competencies by building or reinforcing those daily living skills that will assist the child/youth in living successfully at school.
- Assists in developing the child/youth’s ability to sustain self-directed appropriate behavior, internalize a sense of social responsibility, and/or enable participation proactively in educational activities.
- Ensures safety of client at all times.
- Maintains confidentiality regarding child/youth and his/her family.
- Communicates professionally with students, co-workers and parents.
- Maintain data related to appropriate and inappropriate behavior.
- Provide instructional assistance while working collaboratively with the classroom teacher.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor/building principal.
