8th & 9th Grade Social Studies Teacher

 

Purpose Statement

The position of Social Studies Teacher was established for the purpose of providing support for developing students' success in academics, interpersonal skills, developing lesson plans and delivering group and individual student instruction within established curriculum guidelines: collaborating with other teachers, other professional staff, and administrators in addressing instructional and/or classroom issues; and responding to a wide range of inquiries from students’ parents or guardians regarding instructional program and student progress.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Iowa State Teacher License
  • Bachelor’s degree in position-related area
  • Previous teaching experience, preferred
  • One of the following endorsements is needed to teach 8th Grade United States Studies: 5-8 Middle School Social Studies, 5-12 All Social Sciences, 5-12 American History, 5-12 American Government, or K-8 History
  • One of the following endorsements is needed to teach 9th Grade World Cultures: 5-12 All Social Sciences, 5-12 World History, or 5-12 Social Sciences - Basic



 

Essential Functions  

Instructional Design & Delivery

  • Designs engaging lesson plans tailored to diverse learning styles and needs.
  • Implements best practices and instructional resources to enhance student learning in alignment with state and district standards.

Collaboration & Relationship Building

  • Works with all stakeholders (students, parents, colleagues, administration) to establish leadership, positive relationships, and a culture of high expectations.

Student Learning & Assessment

  • Develops and guides learning in partnership with students, incorporating classroom missions, learning goals, and recognition strategies.
  • Evaluates individual and class performance using assessment data to adjust instruction for continuous improvement.

Classroom Management & Environment

  • Manages classroom structure, procedures, and behavioral expectations to create a positive, safe, and orderly learning environment.
  • Models professional and ethical behavior in alignment with district and state standards.

Professional Responsibilities & Development

  • Maintains documentation and required data to support student progress and compliance.
  • Actively participates in meetings and professional development to stay informed and improve instructional practices.

 

Other Functions 

  • Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
  • Works well with others, maintaining positive and effective communication with school personnel and works well with other custodians on jobs that require more than one person. 
  • Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff, students, and visitors.
  • Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program. 
  • Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to district operations.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution. 
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

 

Working Environment 

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, reaching, driving, standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity.  Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.

Work year established by the District; Salary according to schedule adopted annually.

Job performance will be evaluated annually, as per district policies and procedures.
