At Northwest Public Safety, we pride ourselves on being a state-of-the-art 9-1-1 emergency response center, dedicated to providing immediate help to those in need. Our team of committed professionals works around the clock to ensure the safety and well-being of our communities.

Since 1975, Northwest has built upon our core values of professionalism, teamwork, integrity, reliability, respect, and accountability to provide 9-1-1 communications and Dispatch services to multiple municipalities throughout CT. We are the Primary 9-1-1 answering point for nine (9) cities/towns, and we currently provide Public Safety Dispatch services to thirteen (13) EMS Agencies, eleven (11) Fire Departments, one (1) Regional ALS Fly Car System, and two (2) Law Enforcement Agencies. We also coordinate Ambulance-to-Hospital communications (CMED) to twenty-eight (28) cities and towns and six (6) area Hospitals.

About the position of Public Safety Call Taker:

As a member of our team, you will be tasked to:

  • Answer incoming routine and 911 phone calls
  • Document and maintain detailed and accurate records of all calls, ensuring essential information is properly recorded in Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system
  • Deliver clear and accurate life safety and pre-arrival instructions to callers in potentially critical situations, ensuring effective guidance and support until emergency services arrive
  • Maintain and project a professional attitude by remaining calm, courteous, and respectful with members of the public and partner agencies while working effectively under pressure

Job Requirements:

  • Proficient computer skills with the ability to quickly learn and navigate dispatching software, including typing at a minimum net speed of 35 words per minute
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Eligibility to work in the United States
  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think and react to dynamic situations
  • Availability to work in varying shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Highly dependable in consistently reporting for work on-time and as scheduled; available for mandatory overtime when required

Once we have received your application, your resume, skills, and experience will be evaluated by a member of our hiring team. You will then be contacted to schedule an in-person multi-phase Skills Assessment test. Successful completion of this test will qualify you for an in-person interview and further assessment of qualifications for the position.


This is a full-time, non-exempt 40-hour per week job position, working a variety of shift hours including combinations of 8, 10, and 12-hour shifts. A Collective Bargaining Agreement is in place with IAFF Local 5146.
Pay commensurate with prior experience taken into consideration and as defined in Pay Steps of the collective bargaining agreement.
