Job Summary
Performs work in one or more divisions or areas of the clinical laboratory to obtain data for use in diagnosis & treatment of disease. Oversees other laboratory personnel and acts as a resource person for laboratory testing & reporting. Assists Technical supervisor & Director in laboratory functions & interdepartmental communication.
Essential Functions
- Performs tests timely and with 99% accuracy, with special attention to high priority areas of the hospital, such as ER, OR, Cath Lab.
- Performs quality control and monitors results for evidence of problems with high degree of accuracy.
- Performs preventative maintenance as required.
- Always assays or calibrates new reagents, kits, and other material before put into use. Documents reagents and kits when opened and placed into use.

- Maintains orderly and efficient arrangement of equipment and supplies in area worked. Keeps work area clean, neat and well organized. Cleans up after work is done and leaves counter well organized after shift is complete.
- Notifies appropriate supervisory person of problems or questions that may arise in any department.
- Troubleshoots tests and or instrumentation with good problem solving skills. Performs tests and operates instrumentation with cost saving in mind but not to compromise accuracy.
- Ascertain the integrity of samples and make the judgment to redrawn when needed.
- Enters and receives patient specimens in the LIS with accuracy.
- Uses instrument interfaces with accuracy.
- Runs incomplete logs at the beginning, middle and end of shift, including Blood Bank and Microbiology.
- Assists in training of new employees and educates other laboratory employees in new processes and regulations
- Communicates with other departments with concern for patient's welfare.
- Takes an active role in ordering and maintaining appropriate supply levels with cost containment in mind and trains other laboratory personnel in inventory assessments.
- Performs tests and operates instrumentation with cost saving in mind but not to compromise accuracy.
- Performs duties as requested by the Director and works well with the Technical Supervisor in addressing department functions.
- Reviews documents and addresses Quality Control and remedial actions.
- Checks with personnel periodically to see that tests are being completed and reported within time frame established by the Laboratory.
- Performs proficiency testing for all disciplines in the laboratory that the employee is qualified to perform at a grade of 90% accuracy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in medical technology, chemical, physical, or biological science required
- 2-4 years training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of HIPAA regulations
- Superior ability to perform laboratory testing.
- Knowledge of laboratory and quality control procedures.
- Must be able to work in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Familiarity with the laboratory information system.
- Using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
Licenses and Certifications
- MLS - Medical Lab Scientist (Formally MT Certification) ASCP, AAB, or equivalent required
