Job Summary
The OB Technician assists in obstetric and surgical procedures, acting as a scrub person and handling instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries. This role plays a key part in ensuring a sterile environment, preparing for procedures, and supporting obstetric teams in providing safe and high-quality patient care. The OB Technician collaborates with nurses, physicians, and surgical staff, assisting in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative tasks.
Essential Functions
- Maintains sterile and aseptic technique, ensuring proper gowning, gloving, and draping of surgeons and assistants.
- Prepares the surgical field for cesarean sections and vaginal deliveries, organizing and maintaining instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Demonstrates knowledge of step-by-step obstetric procedures, anticipating the needs of the surgeon and surgical team.
- Monitors and ensures proper handling of surgical instruments, sponges, needles, and supplies, adhering to safety protocols and performing required counts.
- Assists with patient positioning and room preparation, ensuring proper setup for obstetric and gynecological procedures.
- Handles and properly labels specimens, ensuring compliance with hospital policies and laboratory standards.
- Operates, cleans, and processes surgical and obstetric equipment, following proper sterilization and disinfection protocols.
- Performs errands to pharmacy, lab, and diagnostic imaging departments, ensuring timely delivery of necessary supplies and specimens.
- Follows Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and facility standards, adhering to best practices for infection control and patient safety.
- Assists in maintaining unit supplies and equipment, ensuring availability for emergency and scheduled procedures.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
- Technical School completion of a Surgical Technician or OB Technician training program required or
- A combination of education and two (2) years of experience as Surgical Scrub Technician will be considered in lieu of a degree or training program
- 0-2 years of experience as an OB Technician, Surgical Technician, or in a related healthcare role required
- Experience in labor and delivery, obstetric surgery, or women’s health services preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Proficiency in obstetric and surgical procedures, including sterile technique, instrument handling, and patient positioning.
- Strong knowledge of infection control, sterilization, and disinfection processes for obstetric and surgical equipment.
- Ability to anticipate surgical team needs, ensuring smooth and efficient procedural flow.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills, collaborating with physicians, nurses, and surgical staff.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow safety protocols, including proper specimen handling, equipment operation, and surgical counts.
- Knowledge of AORN and hospital policies related to obstetric and surgical procedures.
Licenses and Certifications
- BCLS - Basic Life Support required
- CST - Certified Surgical Technologist preferred
