Description :
The student nurse extern functions under the direct supervision of the extern preceptor. The student nurse extern is responsible for coordinating individualized nursing care to those patients assigned to her / him by applying the knowledge and skills acquired thus far in nursing school. The student nurse extern participates in patient and family teaching. The student nurse extern works cooperatively with other team personnel. The student nurse extern participates in planned classroom offerings to further enhance nursing knowledge. The student nurse extern possesses the skills and knowledge necessary to care for patients according to their age and specific needs as defined below :
Neonates – birth through 1 month
Pediatrics – age 1 month through 10 years
Adolescents – age 11 years through 19 years
Adults – age 20 years through 64 years
Geriatrics – age 65 and older
Requirements :
EDUCATION / ELIGIBILITY : The student nurse extern must be enrolled in an approved program preparing for candidacy for the registered nursing licensure and have successfully completed one academic year of clinical courses in nursing. The student nurse extern must be in good standing with the school of nursing. The student nurse extern must agree to perform only the clinical procedures and activities on the skills checklist in order to protect his / her potential candidacy for Registered Nurse (RN) licensure. The student nurse extern must authorize the school of nursing and Northwest MS Regional Medical Center to exchange information related to the student nurse record, externship application, pre-employment screening, including but not limited to drug screening, performance as an extern, and any other information relevant to him / her as a student nurse extern.
- LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION : The student nurse extern must hold a current Basic life Support (CPR) card.
- PHYSICAL AND SENSORY DEMANDS : Good general health and stress coping ability. Full mobility and ability to participate in vigorous activity. Ability to clearly and effectively
communicate with all constituents (patients, families, peers, preceptor and other health team members) as needed for assessment, intervention, and professional development. Possesses near vision acuity for accurate reading of equipment and recording on patient charts.
