Position Summary:
The Idaho Panhandle National Forest, Bonners Ferry Ranger District is recruiting 1-2 480 or 680 Hour Forestry Technician (Trails and Recreation) AmeriCorps Members beginning May/June through August/September 2025. Incumbent will primarily maintain trails and recreation facilities on the district. This placement will typically work four ten-hour days per week Mondays through Thursday.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties will include serving with FS employees maintaining, constructing, and clearing trails (33%), maintaining campgrounds and recreational sites (33%), and cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment (33%). This requires hiking/ working outdoors with a small crew of 6, and/ or independently. Projects will include trail construction, trail maintenance using chainsaws and hand tools, recreation facility improvements, forestry related tasks, constructing bridges and boardwalks, and other carpentry projects. There may also be one or two overnight spike camps as well as one week-long backcountry trail work camps that will require tent camping and backpacking gear (provided by FS if needed).
Required Qualifications:
- Willingness to work as part of a small team
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Chainsaw experience or a willingness to learn
- A positive attitude
- Current driver's license
- Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
- Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
- Ability to hike 5-10 miles in a day in rugged country.
Desired Qualifications:
- Attention to detail.
- Physically fit for long days of hard work.
- Experience with hand tools and basic carpentry.
- Coursework in recreation management, forestry, natural resources or related field.
- A strong interest in resource management.
Duty/Housing Location:
Duties are performed out of the Bonners Ferry Ranger District in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. Bonners Ferry is a full-service small town at the far northern tip of Idaho. Housing is available in a bunkhouse with a common kitchen and shared bedrooms. The candidate may provide their own housing, camp, or use this free forest service housing. Laundry facilities are not available at the bunkhouse, but is within walking distance from the housings, as are 2 grocery stores.
Terms of Employment:
One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting late May/early June through September 2025. The member must complete a minimum of 480 or 680 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.
Program Benefits:
480 Hour - $7,680 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $1,956.35.
680 Hour - $10,880 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $2,817.14.
The position also includes a $500 gear reimbursement and a $2,000.00 housing fund.
The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
