Position Summary:
The Central Zone (McCall and New Meadows Ranger Districts) Recreation Program of the Payette National Forest is recruiting one 480 Hour Recreation Technician AmeriCorps Member from May through August 2025, based on applicant's interest and availability. The incumbent will perform the duties of a General Forestry Aid in Recreation, assisting the Trails and Developed Recreation staff with motorized and non-motorized trail maintenance and construction, and trailhead and campground facilities maintenance and repair.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Trail work requires the use of hand tools to dig and shape trail tread surfaces and drainage features, cut back overgrown vegetation, as well as construction techniques such as building foot bridges, rock retaining walls, and sign and barrier fence installation. Developed Recreation involves campground maintenance like building picnic tables, replacing campfire rings, and providing campground host volunteers with cleaning supplies, signage or fee envelopes. Some report writing, research, data collection, and data management may be required in assistance to program managers and crew leads.

Required Qualifications:
- Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
- S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
- Must pass a background/driver check
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Willingness to work as part of a small team
- Current driver's license.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30lbs
- Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience reading maps and attention to detail
- Experience backpacking and/or traveling in backcountry environments
- Trail work, landscaping, gardening, farmwork, or facilities maintenance
- Team-oriented
- Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, PowerPoint, Word
- Adobe Acrobat or other software for flyer development
- ArcGIS Pro
- Personal transportation
Duty Location:
Duties are performed within McCall and New Meadows Ranger Districts, Payette National Forest.
Terms of Employment:
Each AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting approximately May through August 2025. The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.
Program Benefits:
$7,680 living allowance dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $1,956.35. The position will also include a $201.19 gear reimbursement fund. Housing will be provided.
The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal and driving background check.
