Health Unit Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY:
The Health Unit Coordinator provides support on the assigned unit that may include reception and clerical functions. The HUC interacts professionally with staff to facilitate a healing environment for staff, patients, families and visitors.
PRE-REQUISITES:
Education: High school graduate or equivalent.
Experience: Unit Secretary experience preferred. Computer experience required. Knowledge of basic medical terminology preferred.
Other: Communicates clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing. Has the ability to organize and prioritize multiple competing demands. Has an approachable, friendly demeanor.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports To: Nurse Manager and Nurse Director
Other Contacts: Charge RN, Shift Administrator, providers and their office staff, patients, families, hospital staff, public and other health agencies
SCOPE:
Machinery or Equipment Used: Office equipment and select patient care equipment
Physical Demands: Primarily sedentary with some light lifting and carrying. Manual dexterity and mobility needed. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching. Regularly pushes, moves or lifts heavy equipment and supplies
Working Conditions: Occasionally exposed to patients and families in a wide variety of circumstances (i.e. accidents, injuries, illness, death, etc.). May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and unpredictable work situations.
Required Protective Equipment: Occasional use of gowns, gloves, masks, face-shield
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Manages department phone calls and messages to support clear and accurate multidirectional communication.
2. Greets anyone entering the departments to support a welcoming environment and to provide direction, answer questions or re-direct as appropriate.
3. Manages appropriate levels of office supplies in a fiscally conscientious manner to support the staff directly caring for patients.
4. Supports timely, accurate, and confidential flow of patient documentation through chart preparations, faxing, filing, copying and verification of completeness.
5. Supports timely and accurate management of providers referrals and follow up appointments.
6. Provides general secretarial support (take meeting minutes etc.) to facilitate a well-run and organized department.
7. Maintains equipment manuals and product pamphlets to ensure information is easily obtained and useable by the clinical staff (including equipment weight limits).
8. Providers general support to providers for the unit’s patient care needs (e.g., scheduling follow up appts., notifying providers of consult requests, finding additional patient information as request by provider etc.)
9. Provides general support to all clinical staff on the unit to best meet patient needs (e.g., answer call bell lights, assist with stretchers, obtain equipment like wheelchairs etc).
