Summary:
The Assistant Director - Enterprise Risk Management will play a critical role in advancing Northwestern Mutual's risk management program by coordinating and monitoring the ongoing management of operational risk across the enterprise while providing strategic risk guidance and expertise to operational areas. This position involves designing, executing, and evolving the enterprise risk management strategy, collaborating with various business partners, and providing strategic risk guidance and expertise. The position reports to the Vice President and Chief Fraud Officer who is leading operational risk management execution in coordination with the Vice President Enterprise Risk Management & Resiliency and the Chief Risk Officer.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Operational Risk Management:
- Track, report and provide insights around operational risk metrics across all areas, creating processes for data collection, analysis, and dashboard reporting.
- Promote consistent risk management approaches across operational areas through collaboration and supporting business-level risk management activities.
- Enhance NM's operational risk management framework, including policies, appetites, tolerances, measures, methodologies, and reporting.
- Establish and document controls to address operational risks.
Regulatory and Compliance:
- Participate in internal and regulatory risk evaluations.
- Support the maturation and execution of other operational responsibilities such as the ethics program, risk response process, and risk management policy efforts.
Team Leadership and Collaboration:
- Provide strategic input and recommendations for risk management program improvements.
- Lead and mentor team members, fostering development and performance management.
- Cultivate relationships with key stakeholders to ensure alignment with enterprise strategies.
- Participate in the Enterprise Risk Executive Committee and other corporate committees as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Educational Background:
- Bachelor's or advanced degree in business, finance, risk management, or a related field.
Experience:
- Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in risk management, audit, compliance, operations, or related fields.
- Demonstrated understanding of risk management concepts and experience with risk management concepts such as risk taxonomy, risk appetite, and risk scoring strongly preferred.
Skills:
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence and communicate effectively with key stakeholders.
- Strong organizational agility and comfort around senior leadership.
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally and "lead without authority."
- Strategic thinking and the ability to connect company strategy with risk management.
