Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by being responsible for programmatic areas under Student Activities, Recreation, New Student Orientation, Card Services, and Campus Center Operations.


Salary: $60,000/year or more depending on experience. 


Essential Functions

  1. Oversees Student Activities in coordination with the Assistant Director of Student Activities.
  2. Works collaboratively with to program a dynamic calendar of activities to enhance the educational mission and the co-curricular experience. Programming must meet student needs and interests in keeping with current trends and best practices.
  3. Leads planning and execution for university events, including New Student Orientation, Opening Weekend, Labor Day, Family Weekend, Regimental Ball, Winter Carnival, and Junior Weekend.
  4. Facilitates equitable and inclusive opportunities for student clubs administration and faculty advisors.
  5. Mentors the Campus Activities Board and Corps of Cadets S-5 Staff Section.
  6. Negotiates and executes vendor and talent contracts for campus events.
  7. Oversees intramural and club sports.
  8. Delivers a competitive intramural sports program, featuring tournament or league structures.
  9. Manages club sports teams and coaches.
  10. Oversees annual budget projection and commitments for club sports.
  11. Monitors the system of accounting for club sports teams.
  12. Oversees operations and recreation programming for the Shaw Outdoor Center; Paine Mountain trail system; NU Class of 1984 Fitness Center, and Shapiro Field House climbing wall in coordination with the Assistant Director of Recreation.
  13. Emphasizes student engagement and development as well as engagement opportunities for the broader university and local communities.
  14. Programming will include several areas of priority, including outdoor recreation, regional recreation, recreation sports/open recreation, wellness and fitness, certifications & skills courses, and collaborative programming with faculty, campus departments, student organizations, and the Northfield community.
  15. Maintains recreation facilities and updates equipment consistent with best practices.
  16. Oversees and executes New Student Orientation (NSO) programming.
  17. Develops a vision, schedules, and interdepartmental collaborations.
  18. Develops virtual, online, and campus programming and resources for new students and families.
  19. Recruits, trains, and develops Student Orientation staff.
  20. Oversees all aspects of CADETcard Services:
  21. Electronic access systems and lock schedules.
  22. CADETcard ID photos, card printing, and card access privileges.
  23. Meal plans.
  24. Leads development and implementation of new services and initiatives.
  25. Maintains the contractual relationship with the UVM CATcard Office and coordinates Norwich ITS support.
  26. Monitors and maintains efficacy of cards, equipment, and systems.
  27. Oversees Wise Campus Center Operations.
  28. Administers a reservation process for meeting rooms, lounges, and tabling.
  29. Manages print and digital display postings.
  30. Communicates public space needs to Facilities Operations and audio-visual needs to ITS.
  31. Manages department budgets, including income and expenses, deposits, reconciliation, and reporting.
  32. Oversees co-curricular assessment in concert with NECHE accreditation standards.
  33. Assesses department needs, retention impact, student learning outcomes, and all programming with emphasis on participation metrics, student engagement, and student satisfaction.
  34. Responsible for safety and risk management for people, programming, facilities, and equipment.
  35. Manages online, social media, print, and electronic marketing.
  36. Participates with applicable professional organizations, including ACUI, NACA, NASPA, and NIRSA.


Other Functions

  1. Assesses the performance of direct reports and provides frequent feedback to optimize their performance.
  2. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.
  3. Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
  4. Serves on university committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
  5. Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
  6. Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
  7. Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
  8. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.


Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required. Bachelor's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Administration, Recreation Management, or a related field preferred. Master's degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel Administration, Recreation Management, or a related field preferred.
  • 3 years of professional experience in student engagement, recreation, or related field with progressive responsibility.
  • Possess or be able to obtain American Red Cross AED, CPR, and First Aid certification.
  • Ability to lead and mentor diverse, dynamic, and disparate student populations.
  • Experience advising student event programming and student organizations.
  • Experience marketing events and managing social media content.
  • Recreation facility management and recreation programming experience.
  • Commitment to student development.
  • Proven record of collaborative programmatic efforts.
  • Ability to recruit, train, motivate and develop student leaders and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated fiscal responsibility, including short- and long-term budget projection.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Positive attitude in the work environment.
  • Ability to work independently and function as a team-player.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook)
  • Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 25 pounds; travel outdoors to various parts of the campus.
  • Evening and weekend work will be required for events and to support campus needs.
  • Travel as needed.


Environmental Conditions

  • Indoor work at a computer workstation.
  • Low level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
