Position Summary: We are seeking a compassionate and knowledgeable Genetic Counselor to join our Breast & General Surgery practice. The ideal candidate will work closely with patients, families, and healthcare providers to assess genetic risks, interpret genetic testing results, and provide counseling and support for families facing complex pregnancies.
Key Responsibilities
- Risk Assessment: Evaluate family and medical histories to identify potential hereditary cancer risks and patterns, assessing both personal and family cancer history.
- Education: Provide information about hereditary cancer syndromes (e.g., HBOCS, Lynch syndrome, etc.), genetic testing options, and implications of results to help patients make informed decisions regarding their care and treatment options.
- Testing Guidance: Discuss available genetic testing options, including multigene panel testing, and assist patients in understanding their options, potential benefits and limitations. Guide them in making decisions based on individual and family history.
- Result Interpretation: Interpret genetic test results and explain their significance, whether positive, negative, or inconclusive, including the potential impact on patient care, surveillance, or preventive measures.
- Support: Provide empathetic emotional support to individuals and families receiving complex genetic information, particularly for those facing difficult decisions or a potential cancer diagnosis. Address concerns and guide patients through potential next steps, including decision-making related to cancer prevention, screening, or surgery.
- Referral: Connect families with additional resources, specialists, or support groups as needed, particularly if a genetic condition is identified.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and thorough records of counseling sessions, assessments, and recommendations.
- Continued Education: Stay updated on advancements in genetics, cancer risk assessment, and testing options to provide the most current and relevant information to patients.
- Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program.
- Current ABGC board certification (preferred) or board-eligible. If board-eligible, expected to obtain board certification within one year of hire.
- Current license to practice in the state of South Carolina as a Genetic Counselor required to be obtained within 90 days of start date (preferred) or limited license obtained prior to start date with intent to obtain full license within one year of hire.
- Previous experience in an oncology/cancer genetics setting preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and empathetically.
- Proficient in electronic medical records and other relevant software.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary team environment.
