We are seeking a unique, experienced computational scientist to lead our team, operating in an interdisciplinary and tightly integrated site with local and global responsibilities. As part of the Emeryville Protein Interactomics Center, we contribute to drug discovery and technology developments across all research sites, disease areas, and technology platforms. We are also a strong local partner to the Novartis Institutes for Tropical Diseases, contributing to a pipeline of medicines for major global health challenges. In all our endeavors, we build on NIBR’s vast knowledgebase and the partnership and expertise of over 5,000 scientists with a huge variety of expert skills and a strong dedication to innovation.

As an insightful, collaborative, and decisive leader and innovator, you will bring strong cross-disciplinary knowledge and scientific leadership to motivate creative, curious scientists. Your scientific skills, experience and passion will lead the way to effectively explore chemical space and delve deep into molecular detail to discover transformative drug candidates.

The role is based out of our Bay Area location (Emeryville), but with a hybrid work model (office/home)

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conceive and lead research programs within the NIBR portfolio
  • Develop and achieve long range program goals and drive their completion for several projects in parallel
  • Bring hands-on experience to develop and apply innovative computational approaches to generate 3D structural understanding of the mechanism of action for novel ligands using advanced modeling and dynamics simulations in close collaboration with experimental scientists
  • Engage and influence interdisciplinary project teams for effective decision-making from target identification through candidate nomination
  • Identify, initiate, and conceptualize new practices to solve problems
  • Set the strategy and direction of the med chem portfolio from early to late-stage and ensure delivery
  • Support integration of new technologies to enhance scientific excellence and productivity
  • Set the strategy and scientific direction across sites as part of our Global CADD leadership team; champion development and adoption of novel technologies, represent CADD and GDC internally and externally.
  • Mentor and develop direct reports and other selected scientists (based on match of experience and topic of development)
  • Provide guidance and feedback on issues of strategy, management, and performance to local and global teams
  • Keep abreast of scientific developments and interact with internal and external scientists to integrate novel insights into computational approaches for drug discovery

Minimum requirements

Advanced degree in computational chemistry, computational biology, computational chemical biology, or related field
  • 12 years of experience applying computational methods to drug discovery
  • Hands-on experience with proven impact in several of the following CADD approaches: Structure-based Drug Design, Virtual Screening & Triaging, Hit and Lead Finding, Molecular Dynamics, Free Energy, Multi-Objective Optimization, Generative Chemistry
  • Highly visible in the scientific drug discovery community: peer-reviewed publications, presentations at well-recognized venues
  • Recognized leader with a track record of providing strategic direction, initiating projects, overcoming challenges, advancing science, and delivering for the drug discovery pipeline
  • Experience in managing and developing scientists
