Scientist – Downstream Process Development/Analytics (plasmid DNA)

Who we are:

Novel Biotechnology USA, Inc, located in scenic Vancouver, WA, is a life science technology company on a mission to make cutting-edge genetic medicines more accessible by developing new solutions for manufacturing plasmid DNA - a critical starting material in next-generation therapeutics.  We are developing biomanufacturing platforms that are safe, scalable, adaptable to complex DNA payloads, have improved product quality, and are many times more productive than existing systems. We deploy our proprietary technologies in manufacturing services that we offer to a growing base of clients.

The role in a nutshell:

As a Downstream Process Development Scientist, you will have the freedom (and responsibility) to shape the future of our plasmid purification platform and associated analytics.  You’ll lead the charge in designing, evaluating, developing, optimizing, and scaling plasmid purification processes (and maybe protein purification processes in the near future).   Working in sync with a multi-disciplinary team of strain engineers and fermentation scientists, you will make your mark on our platform’s success and our mission.

What you’ll need to bring to the table:

  • Innovation is in your DNA – You find it rewarding to take on challenging technical projects, and thrive in the unknown.  You are a visionary who blends sharp instincts with rigorous experimentation to craft creative and innovative solutions.

  • You are a downstream process development wizard – Armed with an advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in biochemical engineering—or a related field—you’ve spent years mastering the art and science of purification. You thrive on developing clever processes that squeeze out every last drop of yield and quality. Your lab coat might as well be a superhero cape, because when it comes to downstream development, you’re the expert everyone calls when they need magic.

  • You have specific expertise with plasmid DNA – With deep experience in plasmid purification processes, techniques like lysis, clarification, ion exchange, hydrophobic interaction chromatography, and TFF aren’t just methods—they’re old pals you know inside and out. You’ve got strong opinions about resins versus monoliths, and you may even find yourself daydreaming about revolutionizing the process altogether. If there’s a better way to purify plasmid DNA, you’re already imagining it—and probably sketching out plans.

  • Plasmid analytics are in your wheelhouse – Does the sample have residual host-cell protein, genomic DNA, RNA, or endotoxins?  What is the fraction of supercoiled material?  These are questions you can answer!  Setting up these assays isn’t just something you can do—it’s practically second nature for you.

  • The laboratory is your happy place – You love being hands-on at the bench, setting up new gear, and diving into experiments (from planning to data analysis).

  • You are a cross-functional collaborator - A team player who is excited to work with others that share your love of science.  Ego?  Left at the door. Understanding the power of a cross-functional crew, you cultivate a culture of respect, are ready to embrace (and respectfully challenge) new ideas, and are not afraid to bring your authentic self to work.

  • You are a clear communicator – you are a pro at making the complex simple.  Whether in speech or writing, you know how to communicate your data-driven conclusions clearly.  You’re also meticulous when it comes to capturing details in your experimental records.

  • You’re all about flexibility and adaptability – You thrive in fast-paced, ever-changing environments, ready to pivot as project needs evolve. No task is too big or too small—you’re willing to take on a wide range of responsibilities and tackle whatever comes your way (both the glamorous and the grind) with a can-do attitude. You’re the kind of person who embraces the chaos, turns it into opportunity, and keeps the momentum going.

Why  join us?
