Responsibilities & Qualifications
Position Overview:
Novelis in Spokane, WA has an opportunity to participate in our summer 2025 internship. The team is seeking a Metallurgical Co-op that can join the team for approximately 12 weeks. The person in this role will report to the Lead Metallurgist. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing hot mechanical testing capabilities and characterizing formability of high strength aluminum alloy sheets. This position will directly contribute to alloy development programs for automotive structural components.
Responsibilities:
- Demonstrate personal commitment to safety by following Novelis safety rules and equipment operating processes. Overall accountability for ensuring safety as the #1 priority.
- Work to deliver the assigned projects by adhering to the technical requirements and providing them on time
- Work closely with multiple teams to meet the assigned project goal
- Perform lab small-scale aluminum melting and casting experiments
- Support with metallurgical sample preparation (includes machining, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching) and materials characterization (OM-SEM-EBSD-EDS-XRD-XRF-OES-DSC-TGA) activities by operating the instruments
- Plan, organize, and execute tests as per the standard requirement for project needs
- Document the results and observations in technical reports
- Support in taking samples and measuring chemistry, inclusions, and hydrogen in molten metal
Minimum Qualifications:
- Recent graduate or senior or junior studying for a degree in metallurgical engineering, material science, or equivalent STEM field
- Laboratory technician skillset
- Willing to work with aluminum scrap, molten metal, melting furnace, heat treatment oven, instruments, salts & chemicals (acids/bases)
- Capability to thrive in a team environment, communicate well, and engage a wide variety of stakeholders throughout the group
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite – Word, PowerPoint, Excel
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience in a metallurgical laboratory
- Experience in scanning electron microscopy and EDS is a plus
- Knowledge of solidification fundamentals is a plus
- Knowledge of aluminum alloys is a plus
- Experience in melting and casting is a plus

Novelis’ Spokane facility also known as the Molten Metal Processing Group (MMP) is located along the border of Washington and Idaho. Employing approximately 40 people the facility focuses on innovating new products and processes to support Novelis’ manufacturing facilities along with the Novelis Global Research and Technology Center located in Kennesaw Georgia.
