What are the responsibilities and job description for the Staff Writer position at NOVOCO?
Position Summary:
The staff writer gathers information and generates content, writing articles for the Journal, blog posts, news items for the web site and other uses including awards collateral, press release, and more. The staff writer also helps with post-production editing and other tasks related to the weekly Tax Credit Tuesday podcast. This position reports to the Senior Writer and Reporter.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Propose ideas for story or brief leads for the Journal of Tax Credits, and write articles as assigned, typically four to five stories per month depending on overall workload/priorities (includes research, interviews, writing, revising and selecting artwork/images)
- Coordinate article edits with sources and editors
- Write news briefs for each section of the Journal
- Procure headshots, logos and other photos to illustrate briefs, and tag files with captions and photo credits. Suggest illustrations and infographics for articles. Update and maintain charts, graphs, and tables for the Journal.
- Proofread the Journal as needed during production
- Write breaking news items for web and industry alert emails
- Monitor state and federal legislation as well as traditional and social media for news leads
- Perform research and fact-checking as assigned
- Prepare drafts for newsletter articles, press releases, awards copy and any other assigned projects
- Support podcast production by editing transcript and audio/video, generating related content and other assorted post-production tasks.
- Assist with other various administrative duties, projects or partner requests as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Excellent communication skills, including strong writing and editing skills, knowledge of AP style, grammar rules, vocabulary, and spelling
- Understanding of printing, publishing and graphic arts procedures
- Superior organizational and follow-through skills, performing work accurately with strong attention to detail
- Ability to successfully manage concurrent projects, including the ability to adapt to ongoing changes in priorities and deadlines
- Understanding of business/accounting practices that relate to the firm’s niche areas of specialty or ability to learn in order to develop written content in a manner which is instructional and displays an expertise of the subject
- Ability to meet deadlines and effectively, prioritize a fast-paced and varied workload, effectively manage a variety of concurrent and shifting priorities
- Strong computer skills, including solid skill in the Microsoft Office suite
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in in journalism, communications or marketing area, and/or appropriate balance of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Up to one year of related work experience is preferred.

- Compensation: $51,000 to $57,000 depending on experience. More is possible if experience dictates.
