Flathead Electric Cooperative (FEC), Kalispell, MT seeks a qualified, dynamic professional to become the next CFO due to an upcoming retirement. FEC has retained NRECA Executive Search to facilitate the search process.

FEC is a progressive, innovative member-owned Cooperative serving the scenic and growing Flathead Valley, located in Northwest Montana. 

With revenues of about $140M, FEC is the second largest electric utility and the largest Cooperative in Montana, with 59,000 members, 76,000 meters served by 170 employees in 3 locations.

FEC provides reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to our members, and we seek a forward-thinking CFO to help lead our Cooperative’s financial strategy, ensuring the continued growth and success of our mission.

Essential Job Functions

The CFO is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and plays a critical role in the financial success of FEC.  The CFO provides strategic financial leadership, oversees all financial operations and ensures the financial health and stability of the Cooperative. 
 
Financial operations include accounting, finance, budgeting, forecasting, risk management and audits.  Manages the Cooperative’s financial performance, including revenue and expense management, capital budgeting and debt management. 

Duties include maintaining financial records, accounting services, budgeting, short/long term financial planning, equity management, regulatory reporting, risk management, inventory control and forecasting plus providing financial reports/analysis to the CEO, the Board and other stakeholders. 

The CFO reports to the CEO, participates in all Board meetings and is the staff liaison to the Finance and Audit Committee.  This position directs 7 staff who possess strong education, training and experience.

Experience & Expertise

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Accounting is required.  Advanced degree and CPA are preferred.     
  • Thorough familiarity with financial management, outside auditor support, strategic planning, cash management, budgeting and financial accounting software is required.
  • At least ten years of experience as a financial/accounting professional is required.  Experience with an electric utility or CPA firm with utility focus is preferred.   
  • Experience as an Executive Team Member/Senior Staff, preferably as a CFO, supervising or leading a department or group is required. 
  • Familiarity with CFC/CoBank and NISC is a plus.

Salary/Benefits

Salary compensation is $167,753-$256,235 depending on qualifications and experience.
