Job Summary:
The Fiber Optic Infrastructure Tester is a specialized role responsible for testing, validating, and troubleshooting fiber optic networks in both indoor and outdoor environments. This position requires expertise in advanced optical testing equipment and techniques to ensure the performance and reliability of fiber optic systems. The Tester will collaborate with engineering, splicing, and construction teams to ensure network compliance with design specifications, industry standards, and customer requirements. Candidates must be flexible to work varying shifts, including evenings, nights, and weekends, as required to meet project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities:
• Conduct comprehensive testing of fiber optic cables, including insertion loss, optical return loss (ORL), and end-to-end continuity validation.
• Operate and maintain proficiency with fiber optic test equipment, including but not limited to Viavi OTDRs, Fluke DSX CableAnalyzers, EXFO devices, Anritsu network testers, and AFL inspection scopes.
• Perform OTDR testing, bidirectional loss testing, and advanced troubleshooting for single-mode and multi-mode fiber networks. Interpret OTDR, CD, PMD, and power meter results to diagnose and resolve fiber network performance issues.
• Verify fiber splicing quality using inspection tools and ensure compliance with design and performance specifications.
• Document all test results accurately using software platforms and generate detailed reports for internal and customer use.
• Collaborate with design engineers to interpret and validate splicing plans and test results.
• Identify and resolve network performance issues, including troubleshooting damaged fibers, poor splices, or improper terminations.
• Adhere to project timelines, safety protocols, and scope requirements while maintaining high-quality standards.
• Support the continuous improvement of testing procedures, standards, and workflows.
Experience and Education Requirements:
• Education Level: High School Diploma or GED required; certifications such as FOA Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or ETA Fiber Optics Certification preferred.
• Experience: 2-4 years of relevant experience in fiber optic testing and troubleshooting.
• Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Proficient in the use of advanced fiber optic testing equipment, including Viavi OTDRs, Fluke DSX Cable Analyzers, EXFO power meters and light sources, Anritsu network testers, and AFL inspection scopes and OTDRs.
• Strong understanding of fiber optic testing methodologies, including insertion loss, ORL, chromatic dispersion (CD), and polarization mode dispersion (PMD).
• Comprehensive knowledge of fiber optic cable types, splicing methods, and network performance standards.
• Ability to interpret network diagrams, splice plans, and test reports.
• Familiarity with a wide range of OSP and ISP enclosures, termination panels, and cable management systems.
• Proficiency in documentation and report generation using Microsoft Office and testing software.
• Experience in troubleshooting fiber networks and identifying root causes of performance issues.
• Understanding of data center security protocols, public right-of-way regulations, and workplace safety standards.
Physical Requirements:
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
• Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions and in confined spaces, such as manholes and vaults.
• Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.
Schedule Requirements:
