General Summary: The Optical Network Transport Technician is a technician roll responsible for the installation, provisioning, and monitoring of equipment and circuits associated with Packet-Optical Platform product lines.
Technical responsibilities include
working with a team to install, test, turn-up, and provision various pieces of Ciena electronic equipment and cabling systems in support of customers in the MSO, cable, telephone, data center and communications industry.
This role is 100% travel, two-week rotations typical but based on customer requirements.
All travel expenses paid, prearranged and booked by the company.
Essential Job Functions:
- Complete packet optical platform equipment installation activities with team (rack and stack).
- Complete structured cabling activities with team (single-mode and multi-mode fiber, AC power cords, and twisted pair cabling). Complete secondary DC power cabling with team: fuse panel (FAP) to equipment within rack.
- Reading and implementing designs/EDP’s (Engineering Design Packages), blue prints, rack elevations (facials), and wire lists.
- When necessary, creating wire lists and bill of materials (BOM) for minor installation materials.
- Communicating with customer, on-site ops, and project management team to coordinate and plan installation activities – daily progress updates.
- Troubleshooting connectivity issues involving rack equipment, optical fiber circuits, power, and twisted pair connections.
- Cleaning, scoping, testing, and certifying fiber circuits – includes use of OTDR and Fiber Characterization test equipment (EXFO and Viavi) Labeling all fibers and cables (P-touch, Brady LabelMark software, LAT labels, Dymo, etc).
- Documentation of complete install and test results.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:
- Detailed knowledge of fiber transport systems, and all associated equipment.
- Ciena 6500, Waveserver, and other Ciena equipment installation knowledge is a plus but not required.
- Detailed knowledge of fiber optic cabling, unshielded twisted pair cable assemblies and proper installation of each – structured cabling.
- Detailed knowledge of secondary DC Power - connecting rack electronics to fuse panels (FAPS), crimping and terminating lugs/terminals, installing fuses (GMT type), turn-up circuits.
- Computer skills – Email, Excel, Word, Outlook, Visio, LabelMark. Ciena FAST software experience is a plus but not required.
- Communication skills – ability of clearly communicating with Project Managers, Construction Managers, customers, and peers.
- General hand-tool usage, crimping on connectors (RJ45), combing cables, cleaning fiber optic connectors, heat shrinking DC cable-lugs/reducers, etc.
- Knowledge of set-up, utilization, and exporting results of OTDR and/or Fiber Characterization testing (EXFO and Viavi testing experience a plus).
Education and Experience:
- 2 years installing & provisioning optical transport equipment/systems.
- 2 years field technical installation and cabling experience.
- 2 years working with documentation on technical jobs (JCR, SOW, MOP creation, BOM creation, etc.)
- Prefer candidates with prior experience working on Ciena 6500 packet-optical product platforms (6500 RLS, 6500 D/S, 6500T, Waveserver) or equivalent (Nokia/Cisco/etc).
- Level 3 Ciena certified applicants are preferred, however, Network Connex and Ciena will provide online and in-person certification opportunities for the right person.
