NTI—a global security organization driving systemic solutions to nuclear, biological, and emerging technology threats imperiling humanity—is seeking a seasoned professional to lead our Global Nuclear Policy Program as Vice President.

The global nuclear order of the past has been fundamentally disrupted and destabilized by geopolitical, institutional, and technological developments over several decades, with current geopolitical tensions and the unprecedented pace of technological developments creating even more urgency. NTI’s Vice President, Global Nuclear Policy, will lead NTI’s efforts to design and promote a new global nuclear security framework that enables a secure world without nuclear weapons.

A highly experienced and dynamic Vice President should be a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of global nuclear policy, strong leadership skills, a strong team player, and a passion for reducing nuclear risks.

Working with executive leadership, peers, and the GNPP team, the Vice President shapes and drives NTI’s nuclear weapon policy agenda, identifies key opportunities where NTI can make a measurable impact in a challenging time, supports NTI’s strategic priorities, develops relationships with policymakers and thought leaders, and advises NTI leadership and programs on nuclear weapons policy, strategy and systems developments.

This position reports to the President, and supervises a team of six, including consultants and interns. This is a full-time position working in Washington, DC.

Key responsibilities :

  • Establish new programmatic directions to reduce nuclear threats and advance over-the-horizon thinking about the global nuclear architecture needed for a more secure future.
  • Lead and mentor team to accomplish program goals and develop professionally.
  • Strategic development and oversight of new and ongoing projects, which may include creating and managing new collaborations; rapid response; overseeing research and analysis; and measuring impact.
  • Represent NTI as a subject matter expert on nuclear threat reduction and nuclear weapons issues in meetings with external stakeholders.
  • Raise funds for GNPP and NTI-wide projects, working with NTI’s development team.
  • Develop and manage the program’s annual budget.
  • Produce or edit compelling materials designed for target audiences, including articles, op-eds, speeches, blog posts, and social media content.
  • Work in close collaboration with NTI’s other programs—including legislative and communications teams—on strategy, messaging, and public education campaigns for nuclear risk reduction.

What are the requirements for the position?

  • Bachelor’s degree in political science, international affairs, or a related field, with graduate experience welcome.
  • Approximately 15 years of professional experience in government, non-profit, or private sector, with a track record of leadership and strategic impact. At least five years should be in the field of nuclear strategy and policy.
  • Recognized subject matter expertise in nuclear weapons policies and technologies, nuclear weapon system operations, and proliferation prevention.
  • Broad understanding of the global nuclear weapon system and its dynamics, including the incentives that hold it in place and potential intervention points for creating a safer nuclear security system.
  • Proven ability to influence and advocate for policy change.
  • Experience interacting effectively with senior U.S. and international officials.
  • Excellent analytical, research, and writing skills.
  • Excellent public speaking and media skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience, including working collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to travel internationally.

  • Proven experience in high-level strategy and advocacy, including successful interactions with U.S. and international policymakers.
  • Well-versed in nuclear weapons policy; nuclear diplomacy among the U.S., Russia, China, and other nuclear weapon states; the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and other multilateral arms control arrangements.
  • Understanding nuclear technologies and nuclear weapon systems acquisition and operations within the United States.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience with grant-writing and fundraising.
  • Hiring Pay Range : $235,000-$275,000 annual, depending on prior experience. This position is eligible for health insurance benefits, as well as other generous benefits that are part of the NTI compensation package.
