Basic Job Functions
Establish the relationships between process parameters and product characteristics. Provides metallurgical support to the maintenance and operations departments as needed. Supports Hot Rolling mill operations through involvement in continuous improvement projects related to chemistry, effects of alloying elements, heating curves in the furnace, separating roll forces on mechanical properties and grain size of the products. Engage in new product and grade development through analysis, experiment, and implementation of new raw materials, chemistries, Hot Rolling mill process parameters, dimensions of the products, and manufacturing practices as well as capabilities. New products can be based on international standards like ASTM, API, ISO, TS, ASTM, ASME, AISI, IATF as well as customer requirements based on the final application of the rolled products. Participate and lead the yield improvement projects with the production team to optimize the rolling process without sacrificing the quality of the end product. Utilize engineering, physical metallurgy, hot rolling, and steelmaking knowledge to optimize process variables to improve product quality, lower production costs, improve mechanical properties and improve process efficiency as well as customer satisfaction. Implement and monitor testing practices per required specifications so that metallurgical requirements are met and optimize the hot rolling process parameters based on the analysis. Review, purchase and install new metallurgical equipment for the upgrading of in-house testing capabilities. Utilize statistical process control tools to direct continuous improvement activities. Develop, revise, and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) for special manufacturing projects. Collects and communicates product quality data and measures the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Performs Root Cause Analysis of operation related defects and measures their effects on final products. Develop and coordinate quality and safety training programs for operations, maintenance, and quality assurance laboratory teams. Support sales and technical services with claims, new product inquiries, and development. Analyzes the effect of changes in the process on the Quality and Performance of the products. Issues and implements the corrective actions and preventive actions for the hot rolling process to improve the operating process and quality of products. Provides technical support regarding customer claims, corporate inquiries, orders and steel grades. Serves as back up contact to customers, technical service and for the Mill Quality. Assures product compliance with ISO 9001:2015 standardization. Conducts lab investigations including outside processor, bench & re-trim, and in-house rejections from Mill. Performs metallurgical evaluations of samples from in-house facility and outside processor. Coordinates with needed testing and sampling with the laboratory in the company. Analyses laboratory test data and records.

Minimum Qualifications
Must have a master’s or foreign equivalent degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Metallurgy or directly related field and eighteen (18) months of product development and metallurgical experience in a hot roll steel mill environment. Experience must include: Product development experience in melting, casting, heat treating, hot rolling, plate rolling and reheating; Root cause analysis utilizing six sigma and lean manufacturing to investigate and prevent manufacturing non-conformities and improve the effectiveness of steel making and hot rolling processes along with improving the final product quality; Using thermodynamics/phase diagrams to predict phase changes, support the materials process such as heat profile in the reheat furnace and/or quench & Temper lines, and failure analysis; Experience running tensile and hardness machines to measure mechanical properties, hardness and run chemical analysis on the spectrometer of steel samples; Experience utilizing various Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES); and
ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 certification required.
